Full Name: Matthias Damian Kistiakowsky
Gender: Male
Age: 14
Dorm: Pyxis
Powers: At the moment Matthias is pretty inexperienced with his powers, having only found out about them within the last few months, but thanks to being cautious but experimenting with them already has a reasonable scope to use them. (The bulk of his power section is written for him once he is acclimatized to his powers. At the start of my writing for him I plan for him to have a narrower range of shifting, between about the height of an average hand and about twice his height, which is still pretty decent. I plan for him to reach these levels within a few more months). He does quite like his powers thus far but finds it a little disconcerting with how they work to have to keep thinking about the implications for his safety. They haven’t had much time to affect him hugely, but have made him more interested in small things already.
Size-shifting: Matthias is able to change his size dramatically. Normally he limits himself instinctively to a maximum of a couple of storeys to a few cm tall. Really his limits are far beyond this, but even with his secondary power, he risks his safety if he shifts in one stage beyond these typical limits. (instead he could do this while moving or in a few stages).
He is capable of bringing objects that are attached to him, or that he is holding, with him if he so chooses. He has no obligation to bring objects, and can only bring inanimate things with him. Animate objects will be subjected to gravity as per usual after.
Matt’s size shifting works by actively removing or adding material to his body. (Him changing his mass rather than his density stops him from reaching densities such that he would start floating off or causing a black hole, neither of which would be good). At very minute sizes he affects his density a small amount but it is still mostly removing material.
His absolute limits are likely down to an atomic size, although he has yet to test this (he has gone small enough to actually look at human cells without a microscope though). He is unwilling to push much beyond this due to being unsure if he’d be able to reverse it. Upwards he knows better than to advance more than around 10 storeys tall as he has to pull in such vast amounts of energy for the added matter that being any larger would run a very real risk of literally freezing to death. He rarely strays about 5 storeys.
Matthias has a minute control of how large or small he can be at any point. He can also change just one part of his body, for instance, but he has to affect all of that part’s dimensions in the same way. Overall, there’s not a lot of point to this.
Adaptive Physiology: Matthias’ body is capable of adapting in any necessary way to survive and function at the sizes he can shift into being. This includes the surface area and relative sizes of certain organs (eg lungs, kidneys, brain) changing for better functioning. The proteins in his bones and ligaments strengthen to allow them to be able to withstand his mass and manipulate his body.
At very small sizes, he entirely dispenses with the need for breathing, first by diffusing out gases and then by not needing oxygen at all. Other chemical intakes follow similar patterns.
If he intakes anything (eg food, medical equipment), it remains the same size relatively to him regardless of whether he would choose it to.
Alex’s strength changes proportionally as he shifts size. As he gets smaller, he gets relatively stronger, and the inverse as he grows. For instance, at a few cm tall, he is able to lift several times his weight, but he’s so small that that’s really not too impressive.
Appearance: Matthias has tan skin and a short stature, although admittedly, because of his size-shifting, it is very hard to give him an exact size. He has a tendency to shift up in size a little just to appear older. Naturally, at the moment, he would be about 5’6”, and is into his growth spurt, but, similarly, covers this.
He is quite skinny, although, like most teenagers, he has an enormous appetite. (Matt has a theory that the extra energy is used for his shifting. This is partially true. Mostly he’s a teenager.)
He has brown, fairly unkempt hair and grey eyes, and typically wears glasses with dark rims, although he does have contacts too; if he’s not wearing them, they’;; almost certainly be hanging off the front of his shirt collar. He rarely bothers to get his hair cut, so ends up with long curly hair all over his face for weeks on end.
He’s fairly clearly a bit of a nerd from his dress sense, where he tends either for button up shirts or fandom-based shirts most of the time- at least he has a good clue about colour coordination. Unfortunately he has less of a clue which colours suit him.
Matt has a bit of a thing for converses. He is also probably one of very few people who actually wears a watch any more.
Matt develops muscle fairly easily, but he doesn’t maintain bulk well.
He speaks English with a strange cross of a French-Swiss and New York accent.
Personality: Matthias is a scientist at heart, with a deep love for discovery thanks to his father. He has a particular interest in anything small. He has the brains to match, and the natural instinct t be highly analytical of what is being told to him.
He has a tendency to be sarcastic naturally. Matt doesn’t cope well with people he deems to be dumb, and can be immensely rude to anyone who is annoying him on top of that.
Most of the time, however, he comes off as a reasonably friendly guy, and is quite happy to talk to people for hours if he sees fit. He is never a good choice to come to over anything emotional, as he’s really no good with them. In fact, he feels awkward about expressing his own emotions, and has been known to briefly leave people so he doesn’t have to deal with that (probably now by literally shrinking away).
Matt has unrealistically high expectations of what he can achieve in a set amount of time, and has a habit of picking up something he thinks he as time for and quitting half way through. In class, he will read miles ahead in any available resources and provide feedback and critique regardless of whether anyone wants him to.
Matt’s the sort of person who can forget to do basic tasks for days if he’s interested enough in something.
Matthias is a bit of a pop culture nerd with a particular soft spot for LotRs, but if it’s iconically nerdy, the chances are he has read/watched it, loves it, and has been obsessed with it. He claims his favourite thing about sci-fi is how ridiculous it is, but he does genuinely love it.
Matt isn’t an introvert, so to speak, but he doesn’t care much if there are people (he likes) around or not. He wouldn’t go deliberately searching for someone unless he had a specific purpose with them at that point, but whilst they’re there, he probably will be talking to them. He likes trying to explain what he’s doing and tends not to notice if he’s gone beyond most people’s understandings.
Matthias is naturally pretty critical with a tendency to analyse too far into things if left alone to it. He also has a tendency to analyse too far into things if left alone to do so. He also has a tendency to deconstruct and analyse) words within speech around him. He expresses irritation by taking a level in sarcasm or getting even more hypercritical.
Matt doesn’t like loud noises and has good hearing for someone with no powers there. He fits in better with people above his age, mostly because he’s been associated mostly with them since he was 4.
Although Matt is pretty quick at running, he shows little interest in physical activity. He’s surprisingly good at climbing and parkour, and this is literally just because he is good at working out which courses are best. He quite likes doing his work up trees when possible.
Matt is from Swiss and Ukranian heritage, so English is his third language after French and Ukrainian. He is still pretty good at speaking it due to practice since he was small, but has a fairly specialised vocabulary into sciences.
Matthias is a bit of a neat freak, and loves well organised systems for even totally mundane things.
Weaknesses: As his size shifting works by in taking mass, and this requires energy from around him, he can potentially cause volatile reactions if he shrinks in size.
He struggles to shift up in cold environments, and trying to can cause him to suddenly pass out due to burning his own energy (when this happens he does not shift up).
Matthias can shift external temperatures around him wildly if he shifts too quickly. Going from normal size to a few cm tall while stationary and in one go can cause the air around him to heat up enough to give him burns all over his skin. Going right to his limit under these circumstances would kill him, and he is aware of this. As long as he moves while shifting or does it more slowly, he’d be okay.
It is incredibly difficult to communicate with him at the edges of his range; either wavelengths are too large to enter his ear or too weak (comparatively) to move his eardrums.
Also, most objects are not built for him while size shifted. He can’t use normal objects. When very small almost everything becomes a hazard for him (at his smallest sizes he’s reached, just basic cell processes can become dangerous).
When very small, he only needs incredibly small doses of things to start having a dramatic effect upon him.
Matt is truly terrible at handling his emotions.
Matt can get way too invested into thing that simply won’t happen, frequently donating several hours or days to things he’ll never complete.
One of the very few things that truly annoys Matthias is reminding him of his great-grandfather’s contributions to science (Manhattan project). He will be absolutely brutal (verbally of course) to anyone who does this. (He does have respect for his great-grandfather but not the repercussions of what he did.)
Strengths: Matthias is pretty good at shaking off attempts to hurt him with words and remains pretty calm through it in most situations. Expressing anger entirely verbally and sarcastically tends to help this so long as no one gets annoyed further by him doing this.
He is tolerant of other people unless they clearly specifically set out to annoy him. He has a lower threshold for people he sees to be very stupid.
Matthias is very intelligent, particularly in book smarts. He tends to spot most of the flaws in things easily, including really minor ones.
Matt has a natural problem solving ability for problems facing him in his physical environment. This will probably be very useful to him in the future if he ever faces a situation where it would be hard for him to shift up to normal sizes for whatever reason.
History & Family: Matthias comes from a long line of scientists. In fact, his great grandfather worked on the Manhattan project. Both of his parents are doctors; his mother a medical one, his father a researcher in particle physics. Matt has no siblings.
According to his grandma (mother’s mother) he is descended from a man who was blessed by fae several centuries ago, but is the only one in the family who believes this. No one has had this gift since her own grandfather, so her tales seemed ridiculous to everyone else in the family, especially when she claims they are related to the person who inspired Gulliver’s Travels. Matt doubts this in the strongest possible terms.
Matt is half-Ukranian, half-swiss. He was born in Geneva, Switzerland, due to his father moving from the Ukraine to work at CERN. (His grandfather moved back from the US to Ukraine after it became more stable). Due to the working languages at CERN, and his mother’s clinic getting a lot of English-speaking customers, and Matt’s insistence to visit CERN as frequently as he could as a kid, he has always been better than most Swiss boys at English.
Alex had a fascination with the facility even when he was really small and was almost always the youngest person there. He was entered into school a year early once it was clear how readily he seemed to be able to learn things when he asked about them. He even started complaining, at four, that school was too easy. He had to be stopped by numerous CERN staff from acting as an informal tour guide as soon as his English was good enough.
Due to his criticalness, intelligence and age relative to his year, Matt was never popular in his primary school; he maintained a status quo of casual avoidance via heavy sarcasm.
Matthias was basically the top nerd of his school, and had to be privately persuaded by the headmaster at his school to reduce the number of GCSEs he had applied to study, as some idea of what sort of student he is.
He actually found his powers while in school, in a games lesson. Needless to say, Matt isn’t great at dodgeball, and in the middle of a match he got slammed pretty hard in the chest with a ball and fell over. The other students lost track of him briefly, when he had triggered his powers under panic from being knocked back by a dodgeball. It took about a half minute before he came back up to normal size again. The other students didn’t really notice what happened in this gap, thankfully.
Matthias started training himself on how to use his powers, mostly to check his sanity, within the next few days.
Matt deviated from his previous interests into biology soon too. It was a lot more interesting when he could genuinely see what was happening.
He found out about Foresta of his own accord (internet browsing) and applied due to interest, as well as acceptance that if anything bad were to happen, it would be best for him to be near to other gifted individuals. He didn’t even consult his parents before writing to ask to be invited.
When his parents found out (the postman didn’t know the address, so brought the letter back), they were confused as to why their normal son would want to go there. Matt did, eventually, confess as to why. His parents were not too pleased. They thought he was just perpetuating his Grandma’s stories, blatantly lying. When he demonstrated to them, they asked if he could just not use his powers (or rather, his mother did).
This confrontation cemented his going. His father is, just about, okay with his powers (he’s asked if Matt’s powers could be used to help particle research, even), but his mother still isn’t for unknown reasons (probably knowing the safety risks of his powers better than him).
