Full Name: Leocadia “Leo” Esther Merlo
Gender: Female
Age: 17
Dorm: Lyra
Powers: Leo has had her powers fully since she was in her early teens, although she first displayed signs of the sonic screams when she was a baby. One of her older brothers has similar powers, although neither of her parents do. She has a mild disliking for her powers. On the one hand, she does get a pretty cool skill, which she finds great fun to use. However, she feels that it’s really got no good practical uses, shades doubt from people who know about her powers as to whether her talents are really on her merit, and she’s worried that she’ll accidentally hurt someone with her powers.
”Sonic Screams”: (Leo lacks a better way to describe them). Leo is capable of producing a huge range of pitches at immense volumes. She is capable of shouting loud enough to genuinely cause people’s ears to bleed (300dB), and has a range going beyond the normal auditory range at both ends. Leo thus far has reached nowhere near her upper limit in volume. She can hear her voice at any pitch that it hits. Leo can enter this while using her voice in any way; be it singing, talking, shouting.
Leo is capable of targeting the noise she makes, such as over a short channel or wide area, but this requires a good deal of concentrating. She cannot target the distance of her screams’ effects. She can essentially produce sonic weapons with her voice, although nothing like that shown in films.
She faces fairly normal constraints in the way this works compared to a normal person in function. The louder she goes, or higher she goes, the more lung uptake she needs, meaning that anything she produces is shorter. Pushing herself for too long does make it harder to continue with other notes, despite the lack of damage it causes her. It’s harder for her to make low notes loud, and by the bottom of her range, she’s struggling to reach her normal speaking level. She is still affected by things such as colds in a normal way.
Leo has enough force from her voice, even at the moment, to cause metal to bend if she focuses, or to push objects (and fairly light people) backwards.
Sound Imitation: Leo can mimic the noises she hears around her. The longer it’s been since she last heard a sound, the worse the quality of her imitation. She’s capable of changing the pitch or volume of a sound she copies, but she can only imitate what she was actually hearing; if she’s concentrating on just one sound at the time, she can’t copy others from that time; if she’s hearing something through a wall, it still will sound muffled if she imitates it etc. It can, in theory, be used to check if she misheard something.
She cannot just use this to imitate someone’s voice for extended periods, although it does go a long way in helping her to.
This has to work as her voicing the sound, she can’t just magically procure one. She doesn’t tend to use this much except to annoy people.
Immunity to Noise-based Mal-effects: This includes the effects of her other powers, such that when she does a sonic scream, it doesn’t damage her vocal chords any more than just speaking would have done. She also has a cap on the volume that she can hear (around 80dB), so that she doesn’t damage her own ears with her powers. She is generally aware if something is louder than this, but she has no idea to what extent.
Leo is immune to sonic weapons, but not to shockwaves from things such as explosions. Leo is also immune to effects such as those produced by long exposure to sonar or other high intensity, low frequency sounds. This combined with her actual voice gives her a limited ability to use sonar should she want (navigable but not precise). She’s nigh immune to effects of compression upon her airways due to ambient pressure, thanks to this ability.
Appearance: Leo is Latina, with large brown eyes. She has a rounded face, with a wide, shallow nose. Leo’s fairly short, just over 5 feet, and pretty slim (although she’s hardly a stick-figure) thanks to her drama and dance. Leo has studs in her right eyebrow.
Leo naturally has slightly curly black hair, but has a tendency to both dye it and go some of the way to straighten it out, although she’ll normally leave some of the waves in. She’ll dye her hair some new colour every few weeks, although tends to go between golden-brown and black hair. Most of the time, it reaches a few inches beyond her shoulders, but it should really never surprise anyone to see that she’s shaved a section off or cut it drastically; she just likes experimenting a lot with her hair.
Leo frequently wears quite a lot of make-up, but she won’t bother for just school or time with close friends. For parties, however, it’s pretty much expected that she spent at least an hour on it. She cares quite a lot about her style, and she will always have put a reasonable amount of thought in. She tends to wear dark colours, and very feminine clothing primarily. Leo likes skirts and leggings (not as a combination), and in winter, it’s a rare event to find her without a zip-up hoodie.
She generally carries around painkillers in her pocket. These aren’t for herself, but to give to people if she finds she’s gone a “little” far with her powers near them.
In the names of an arranged performance, Leo will go all out in her appearance. She will do anything reasonably possible for the performance to look the part, which has, in the past, lead to her being a bit of a diva regarding costume choices for plays.
Personality: Leo is clearly a girl who has had to practice how she speaks. She’s not too concerned about what she’s saying, but there’s always a slight hesitation. She doesn’t much care how she comes off to other people. Leo really doesn’t care about tact- if something’s bugging her, she’ll just talk about it.
Leo’s a little quiet but not abnormally so. She’s willing to talk to most people, happy to strike up conversations and keep them going, but not the sort to force people to talk. However quiet she is in speech, she is the sort of person to spend most of the time humming or singing.
She can be cheeky and a little mischievous to other people, verging on flirtatious occasionally. It’s not beyond her to use theatricality purely to tease people. Leo has a natural inclination for playfulness with people. She’s fairly average intellectually.
She’s naturally a fast learner, although better with anything she learns by doing.
Leo likes sports and training, and so on, but she’s naturally not very competitive at these, which is the main reason she’s never joined a team. She doesn’t have a huge confidence in her skills at many things; but the few things she does have confidence at, she’s massively competitive at- singing, dancing and acting. Leo can be pretty selfish in this regard, seeing as she wants to work in acting when she’s older (loving the idea of working for Disney or Broadway); and she knows this would be a huge amount of work. Naturally, she’s completely unafraid of performing.
Thanks to her own skills, she has developed a natural interest in musicals and an even more natural one of criticising the music industry.

Weaknesses: 1) Thanks to the cap on volume she can hear, Leo is effectively partially deaf. She can hear anything being said at a normal volume by anyone around her, but struggles to tell the difference between shouting and just slightly loud speaking. When hearing other people, this isn’t a huge worry. When trying to control her own voice, it really is. She struggles a lot to know when she’s actually just talking, leading her to be more hesitant to speak than really suits her.
2) When Leo’s excited she has a little bit of a tendency for her voice to go higher and higher and louder and louder. She generally has pretty good control on this, but that doesn’t help too much when she’s distracted.
3) If someone wants to counter-act her powers, it’s fairly simple for them to just wear decent ear-protection, and she’s essentially powerless.
4) Being a bit too much of a perfectionist, can lead her to completely reject doing anything new if she thinks she’ll be bad at it, and to become hugely annoyed at something she did if she thought she could do a lot better. These, of course, effect each other, meaning that she’s frequently refused to do school work if she’s done badly at it before, such that she has suffered hugely in some of her subjects from this.
5) She’s actually scared of dogs. Not all dogs, but a large proportion of them scare her enough to just entirely stop her in her tracks. The culprits are large or loud dogs- so a Rottweiler will scare her as much as a loud Jack Russel. She’s completely fine with the rest, and to those she’ll coo over them for hours if left alone with one. This is an inherited fear from her mum.
6) Leo is not naturally forgiving of other people, especially those that get in the way of her competitiveness. She tends to see people as rivals (although normally in the sense of pushing to beat them rather than hating them).
7) Leo is pretty arrogant about the skills she actually likes. She hates the idea of losing them, and of losing her powers, meaning she’s a bit of a diva about her voice.
Strengths: 1) Leo is naturally pretty determined, and won’t give up easily for her goals.
2) Although her perfectionism normally weighs up as a weakness, it can weigh in her favour too, in that once she’s sure that she can do something well, she will put huge amounts of effort into it.
3) Because she doesn’t care too much about other people’s opinions, she never feels constrained to follow normal rules or judgements of other people.
4) She’s naturally fairly cheery, and rarely mopes over anything that seems to be going wrong for her. Although she won’t easily forget about something she feels she failed at, or anyone who made her feel that, she won’t let those feelings get in the way of anything else she’d want to do.
5) She’s naturally a fast learner, which goes at least some of the way in counter-acting her defeatist attitude to most of her school-work.
History & Family: Leo’s parents (Adrián and Katarina) met in a dramatic arts college, and were essentially college sweethearts. They married shortly after they graduated, and then settled in New Mexico, not far from their college. Her mother became a drama teacher, while her father took up working in theatre. They had four children, Simón, Héctor, Angelina and Leo, the youngest.
Leo was born premature, actually on the way to the hospital three weeks early, in the car, but other than that she had a fairly normal early childhood. Leo had abnormally loud screams as a baby, but her parents dismissed this as nothing unusual. They first knew their children weren’t exactly as normal as they seemed however, when Héctor was entering puberty and started shattering glass objects with his voice when he yelled. They already knew this was pretty much impossible within normal vocal parameters. But Héctor developed no further power and essentially, his parents made the reasonable assumption that the guy who can shatter glasses with his voice is not particularly dangerous, so long as he can control volume. And he could.
Leo started developing an interest in drama when she was just a toddler, thanks to her parents, and developed upwards from just mild interest to spending huge amounts of her time on singing and acting. It wasn’t a huge surprise then, that at 10 years old, she discovered her powers during a community play she was in. It was a musical, and she was one of the major parts (actually playing Dodger in a community version of Oliver!) when she got a little over-enthusiastic and hit a far higher – and louder- note than was required, and shattered the glass on the lightbulbs around the auditorium, as well as caused several people to have throbbing migraines for the next few days.
Her parents initially thought of getting her under training- issues with her powers were rare at first- and this largely worked. Sure, she still had issues occasionally, but most of the time, the worst that happened was someone got a headache which, in the scheme of things, really wasn’t a big deal. But, on her end, she started getting judgement about her powers from people around her, and, largely she wasn’t too concerned, but it still started to get on her nerves.
As her powers got continually stronger, and so did the insults and offense taken to her, she made the decision of her own volition to go to Port Albion. Or rather, to go to the weird place which some instinct was pulling her towards. She cleared this with her parents only after her brother Héctor said he’d come along with her just recently. While Leo joined the academy, her brother took up a job within the town and a small apartment just large enough to cope with two people staying in there in holidays.
In Character Sample: Leo dropped down into the seat and pushed it round gently. She gave a little sigh of relief. Well, that had gone pretty well. She hadn’t shattered anything this time, which was indubitably a good thing. In fact, she hadn’t even noticed any flinching at her voice.
She grinned, and pushed back into the chair, now allowing herself some of the water she’d fetched just beforehand. Leo was getting better at this- not just her powers, but keeping her calm regarding them.
She shut her eyes, running over what had just happened, feeling her performance had gone pretty well, until she stumbled mentally upon one part of the dance routine before her song where… damnit, she’d stumbled. That had to have been the wrong move. Three months of rehearsals and she’d gotten the details wrong on the first night.
Leo slammed the cup she was holding down on the desk and sprang up suddenly. The chair span in an arc as she took her first step off across the room in her pacing.
What was the point of all that training? She thought. She’d screwed that up, and she’d ruined her part and she knew how the other performers would all pick that out tomorrow- Okay, so that sucked, but she still had four other nights of performance to prove she actually knew the part. She could do that. There was no way they could go worse.
It was then, just after she’s gone across the width of the room twice, that she heard her phone buzz in her coat pocket. It was on the back of the door, only a few steps away, and so she went for it without thinking. She unlocked the phone, and grinned as she found the responsible text, from her sister. “Flawless! Can I watch again tomorrow night?”
