“No, of course not, we’ve had amazing moments together, and you are the one person I’ve ever loved,” he leaned down to where she was sitting up against the roof. Looking up at the sun, he stared back down at Amy, pulling at the cloth wrapped around the lower half of his face; he wouldn’t have very much time considering how bright the sun was right above him. He flashed her as good a genuine smile he could muster, which wasn’t that great, before he reached out and tenderly grabbed her bruised hand. “That did hurt, quite a bit, you know,” he told her, keeping his eyes glued on her multicolored knuckles, cracking a small smile.
“Amy, I couldn’t do that to you,” he murmured, “look at you,” he locked his gaze with hers and smiled, “you’re a girl born to be in the sun, besides, you can’t take very good pictures in the dark.” With the softest kiss, he bent down and kissed her injured knuckles, the kiss much to light to cause her any pain. “Come on,” he reassured her, “you don’t need me! Trust me, you’ll find someone ten thousand times better, a surfer maybe, someone you can take to the beach with all your beautiful children. He might even turn out in pictures,” he winked at her. God, how he hated this, putting on a façade that would maybe make things better. At this point and time, all Kenric wanted was to crawl into a small, dark hole and wallow in his own self pity. But he couldn’t, he had to make it seem like everything could and would be okay.
“You’ll be more than fine,” he promised, “Now me on the other hand, I’m not so sure.” Turning to look around, as though someone was eavesdropping, Kenric pulled up his scarf and wrapped it tightly around his mouth, nose and ears, “Remember what I said when we went out to dinner? I said that I’d experienced everything I wanted, and you didn’t think I had. Well, I think I have, Amy, I’ve experienced true love,” And I’ve lost it, he told himself grimly. Straightening up, Kenric spun on his heel, just so she wouldn’t see his face crumple in sadness. Gaining his composure in a matter of seconds he cleared his throat and turned back around. “Would you like me to walk you home, or are you going to stay here a little while longer?”

Amy gave a small snort, wiping away more tears with her left hand. "You mean it hurt me,"she mumbled. "You probably don't have a scratch on you. That's probably the stupidest thing I've ever done." It had felt like she had tried punching a brick wall, with a steel covering over it. Maybe she was being too hard-headed. She just couldn't stand finding him again only to lose him.
"Sure you can,"she mumbled to his comment about taking pictures in the dark. "It's called flash." Feeling his lips on her hand made her cry again, knowing this would probably be the last time he'd let them see each other. Bringing her knees up, she placed her head on them, hiding her face from him, squeezing her eyes to try to stop the tears. It hurt to see him smile, to try and make this seem like it was no big deal.
Looking up at him, she shook her head. "You've experienced true love, and you don't want to keep it? You don't make sense to me sometimes..." She wiped away her tears and gave a large sigh, trying to smile. "I know everything you're saying is right, Kenric,"she muttered, looking back down. "I just wish there was something we could do. You're the only guy who has loved me. Trust me, in college there were a few people who tried to get with me, but I would always end up comparing them to you. Nobody was ever good enough."
"I have to head back home. I have to pack a few things to go home and get this fixed,"she answered, looking at her hand. Amy shakily stood up, grabbed her camera from where it was and walked back to him. With a sad smile, she wrapped her arms around him, burying her face in his shoulder. "I'm going to miss you..."

“Amy, you have no idea how badly I want us to keep going, how much I wish this could go on and we could just be happy, but…” he let out an exasperated sigh, trying to find the right words. “When you love someone as much as I love you, you want the best thing for that other person, even if it means letting them go.” Listening to her statement about all the college guys that had thrown themselves at her, he nodded, “Amy, the only reason you’re so upset right now is because you’re experiencing the denial and rejection, it’s human nature to feel sad and want to cry when someone ends something with you, but it’ll pass. I was never good enough for you.”
“Alright, then.” Kenric took a deep breath, trying to keep his emotions in check. Wrapping his own arms tightly around her, he placed his hand behind her head, pulling back for a second to look at her for one final time. “I’ll miss you too.” He let her go and stepped back, standing back so she could walk off the roof first.

Sighing, she shook her head. "Rejection isn't a big issue for me. I've come to realize that if I get rejected, I can get somebody ten times better ten times faster. I'm so upset right now because I've just lost one of two people I was close to." Stepping away from him, she thought for a minute. "Are we going to stay friends or just end this completely right here?"she asked, waiting for the painful words she knew were coming her way.
Of all ways for them to end, she didn't think it would have been a big fight. He was right though; her favorite place was at a beach, the wind in her hair, only with the people she cared about. How could she stand to live in the darkness? It didn't seem possible for her; the first few nights, though, she had found it much more comforting to sleep during the day. It took a lot for her to sleep at night and even when she could muster it, his face, yelling at her, blood-thirsty always seemed to wake her up.
Amy gave a shaky sigh again and rubbed her face, trying to calm down. "I'm sorry about all this. It's just the second time I've felt this way. It's like opening a wound that had almost healed and pushing lemons on it and then laughing about it." Giving him a small smile, she shrugged. "We'll see each other around campus, though. I'm willing to stay friends if you are. No pressure?"

Kenric sighed and frowned, though she probably couldn’t tell. “I don’t th—maybe us being friends isn’t a good idea,” he admitted sadly, “So, no. We’re ending it right…here.” It was sad to have to say it, but it was important to make sure they both understood what was going to happen once they parted for the last time.
“It’s fine,” he promised her, rubbing his hands together, horrible with every passing second. “I know the feeling,” he muttered, his tone almost angry, having to end this conversation made his blood boil at the side of him that was so willingly letting her go. The side that was giving her up, though, was much stronger than the angry side.
“Yeah, we’ll see each other around,” he lied, allowing a smile to reach his eyes as he looked down at her. Why would he torment the two of them by seeing each other around. What if she got a boyfriend while he was still around, how was he supposed to deal with that, what if he decided he wanted her back despite trying to do the good thing, and she was willing to get together, then what? This whole thing would have been a waste, no, he wouldn’t do that. No matter how much he wanted to see her, he just couldn’t.

His words broke her heart. She felt her body almost sag, all the hope she had gone. Stepping back onto the roof, she shook her head. "I think... I think I should stay up here for a little bit,"she muttered, moving to where she had been. Sitting down, she held onto her body, trying to keep herself as calm as she could.
"I won't jump, so you can leave. I'll make my way around on my own." Amy looked back at him. "Good bye, Kenric." In her head, she whispered a small I love you. Placing her head back down, she gave one sob and held the rest in, waiting for him to leave. He didn't want to be there, he didn't want her, and she would make sure not to see him again.

“Alright, I guess I’ll just…leave then,” he cast a weary glance in her direction when she made her way back over to the edge of the roof, but said nothing. When she reassured him she wouldn’t jump, he still wasn’t too sure if he believed her. Anyone in a state of emotional distress could hardly be accountable for their own actions, he sorely hoped that she could be trusted, though.
“Goodbye, Amy,” he told her, looking over at her one last time, hearing her last sob and then walking off the roof and into the building. Once safely inside, he peeled off multiple layers of his clothing, leaving only his jeans, shirt and shoes before he reached the entrance to the building. Pushing the doors open, he sprinted off into the forest as fast as he possible could, eyes closed shut, rarely opening just to see where he was going. Goodbye love, he thought, goodbye reason to live, goodbye life. And with that, he disappeared into the darkness, right where he belonged.
