And She Wondered Where the Insight Went...

She listened to him, realization dawning on her. When he was done, Amorina looked back at her hand and sighed. "You won't have to worry about getting in my way,"she whisepered. "He... He came very close to killing me. I don't think I could ever feel the same way about him again." It was going to take a while for her to try and explain this, while trying to give some Spanish in there to help.
"Him and I had been in a relationship four years ago, and we loved each other. People change, some for el mejor, others for el peor. He changed for el peor. You see, he's a vampire and, when I met him, only drank animal blood. He went back to human and did not tell me. When I cut myself..." She struggled to get it out, looking only at her hand. "When I cut myself, he went crazy." Stopping, she had to take a break. She could feel small tears forming but brushed them away. "And I stopped him. He just ran away, though, and I don't want to see him again. He isn't the same person I fell in love with. I thought it was, but it isn't and it never will be."
Looking back at him, she gave him a sad smile. "I'm sorry you had to see me and him. I wish you hadn't..."

Emilio listened to all of this with concern mingled with no small amount of concentration shaping his expression. When she was finished, he was silent for a few moments, his deep brown eyes not focused on anything in particular. His lips moved, as he translated all of that as well as he could. Emilio was grateful that Amorina had dispersed some Spanish in there, but there was a lot to digest.
First, he was angry at the man with light-skin, for doing this to her. Then he was sad and sympathetic. Both showed on his face. Emilio was an expressive person and he was usually pretty well-read.
Emilio had seen the tears in Amorina's eyes and he'd wanted to comfort her- but a hug in his current state would be a messy business indeed and he was a bit wary of inciting feelings now. He did not want to be some kind of rebound guy. That would not be honorable. Emilio liked Amorina more than that- he could not take advantage of her right after this kind of pain.
"Yo tambien," he murmured. However, he was probably lying when he said that. It would have hurt more to have gone on and found out about her ex-boyfriend later.
Emilio wasn't going to try to deny it- Amorina captivated him in a way he wasn't used to. And he would love to pursue her romantically... but he would go slowly. He was certain he'd heard an invitation in her words, but there were things that just didn't translate and she might not feel the same way when her heart was healed from this blow that her vampire friend had dealt.
There wasn't much he could say. What could Emilio possibly utter to ease this? Obviously, nothing complex; he didn't want to be misunderstood.
For a while, he just sat there with his dark eyes studying her, a pathetic mixture of hope, sadness, conflict, pity, and impatience on his face. It was clear that he was trying his hardest not to move close and envelope her sadness and her heartache in his arms. The intent was there, in the way he held his arms, in the way his shoes contacted the floor...
At length, he said simply, "I am sorry for your... your dolor... The word is pain, yes? I am sorry for your pain."

"I wish he had stayed out of my life. It would have made everything easier,"Amorina muttered. Her hands ran over her face and hair, letting it drop wildly and naturally, before she sighed, trying to smile at him. It looked like he wanted to hug her, but she still wasn't sure if it was because he wanted to hug her or if it was just to be nice, to make her feel better, to be a better friend. Instead, she placed a hand on his arm. "Gracias por escuchar. It helped." At the moment, she wasn't even worried about the mud on him. She could get muddy just to be able to know that there was still something there.
To know he was sympathetic made her smile grow a little. It made her feel better to know somebody cared, even if it was just manners, or being friendly. All she wanted to do was know what was going to happen, to know if she should give up now or if she should wait. Something inside Amorina told her to wait; dating somebody so quickly after that would make her feel like she was using them. Still, her and Emilio had gone on a date already. She would not use him like that, for a rebound, just using him to get over another guy. No, she would use him to prove to herself that there was somebody out there better for her than Kenric and that she had found him already.
Before she forgot, she gave a small,"Oh." Amy cleared her throat. "Caroline suggested we go out and we found there is a festival going on. We'd like you to come. It would make us feel... Seguro." She wouldn't trust herself to drink if he was not there; at night, in the town, drunk: it seemed like a recipe for Filet Amy. It would make her feel too scared if she admitted this, though, so she kept it to herself and waited for his answer, her left hand still on his arm, her smile slowly losing the sadness in it. Why should she be sad? Her mind knew that she had lost Kenny years ago, and this had only confirmed it. The sadness still within was telling her it didn't matter. He had still been her Kenny, and she still wanted it to be like before.

Emilio smiled when she thanked him, saying, "Por nada. Is good to... speak, yes? Let it out." If he ever met this vampire in person, it would be very hard for Emilio not to punch him. Just to let him know his feelings on this entire subject.
When Amorina touched his arm, his heart raced. It was an involuntary thing and he was appalled that he would react this way, given his history with women and his decision to take it easy with this one.
He looked up into her eyes, trying to read them and failing miserably. He was silent until her question registered.
Emilio broke into a happy smile. He'd planned on going already- there was live music and food. It was all very natural that things would settle into place like this. And he would be able to guage her feelings toward him a little better, undoubtedly, when things were not so awkward and the pain so recently recieved. "O-of course!" he said, pleasure putting lights in his eyes. "I with you and Hermanita, and nobody bothers!"
---
Caroline felt that it was time to return to the table. It was hard to tell from where she was standing, but the way her brother was sitting was more relaxed than it had been before and Amorina was smiling. Whatever seriousness they had been discussing was probably over.
She made her way over, smiling slightly, and sat down. She was pleased with the happy looks at the table, but wondering what had just happened. However, she did not ask- it was probably not her business. Instead she took a sip of her tea and grimaced. It was cold.

Relief filled her when he said he would go; at least now she wouldn't feel so vulnerable in the dark. Now all she had to worry about was what she was going to wear, and if she was going to make it back in time for the first night. Amorina had to go home for a little bit to have her father take a look at her cut. It was worse than she had expected, but knew he would be able to fix it in less than a few hours.
She smiled at Caroline and noticed her face when she took a sip of her tea. "Cold?"she asked, and then nodded. "I'm about to go get more. I can get yours if you want, it wouldn't bother me at all." It felt like nothing would bother her right now. She was about to go out with her new friends, to have fun, to not have to worry about anything.
Amy was still sad, of course, but with these next few nights coming up, she was excited too. It would give her the chances not to think about him, to be too busy having fun to worry. She doubted Kenric would be there, surrounded by so many villagers. It was the beginning of a bad horror movie, anyway.
"Emilio said he would come to the festival with us,"she said, looking at Caroline, taking her hand from his arm and smiling. "So I am going to drink with you at least one of those nights." The smile on her face now was a bit mischievous, knowing what awaited her at the festival. Nothing but fun.

"That's good." Caroline gave a warm smile to her brother, who was looking awfully pleased himself. Perhaps he was still interested in Amorina? Caroline couldn't blame him- the girl was lovely. "It's going to be so awesome!" she enthused about the festival. It would be nice to just let go of her adult worries for a while. All that would be on her mind that night would be finding a nice-looking dance partner, clothes, and how to best downplay her scars and play up her few good features.
"Nah, I'm good. Should have stopped at one, really. Now I'm feeling the caffeine."
---
Emilio shivered when Amorina took her hand from his arm. It wasn't for a vision or any sense of foreboding- he was merely feeling the chill more now. The water evaporating off of his skin was making him chilled. Still, he did not want to move. Not while Amorina was there and everyone was feeling better than earlier.
It was hard to convince himself to rise to his feet and announce, "Yo necesito... I need to-to go... put dry clothes..." He struggled with the English, but ended up shrugging and plucking at his still-very-damp shirt by way of excuse. It would simply not do to get sick and miss out on the festival because of it.

Amy gave a small squeal and smiled at Caroline. "I know, I'm so excited! It'll be nice to just get out and have fun." Thinking a little, she stopped as she was about to get up and looked at Caroline. "Oh, do you think I could stop by your place a little before it begins so I can drop my stuff off? If I'm gonna spend the weekend there..." She wasn't sure if Caroline had remembered that, or if they were still going to do it.
Smiling at Emilio, she nodded. "Good idea. Don't want you to get sick before the festival." Not that she would mind staring at him just a little bit more. Amy was sad that he was going to leave, but she knew she'd see him again soon. Saying a small, "See you later," she couldn't help but wishing she could rub this in Kenric's face. To be able to see his face, to see him glaring at this other man would make her happy. To know she was still in control of him would make her ecstatic; she'd use it against him to make him hurt as much as she had. Then she would leave him be.

"Yeah, sure." Caroline took out a pen from her purse- it had been slung, forgotten for a while, over the back of her chair- and jotted down an address on a napkin. "There you go, just in case I forget later or something."
In her head, she was making a list of stuff she'd want to get for a guest, like food and all that. Even if they were going to eat at the festival, it was a good idea to have a fully-stocked kitchen and all that. If there was anything Tobias had ever taught her, it was that a hangover was a lot easier to bear if you ate after drinking.
"Hasta luego, hermano." Was all she said to Emilio. He lived in the same building- for him, that was excuse to invite himself over at any time and raid her fridge. Caroline was a little worried that he would invade their privacy while Amorina was there, but if she warned him to not make a nuisance of himself, he'd probably listen.
-----
Emilio's heart started racing again. It was a mix of Amorina's "see you later" and the knowledge that she was going to be spending the weekend in the same building he lived in.
He nodded at both of them, completely dumb in his happiness, and strode towards the door, his coffee absolutely untouched. Then, as a last thought, he slapped some more wet bills on the counter. He gave the barristas a contrite look and left.
The moment he was out the door, he let out a whoop of excitement and ran all the way home through the rain.
-----
Caroline watched her brother leave, heard his yell, and rolled her eyes. She asked, "So you resolved whatever it was that was bothering him?" It was more a statement, actually. It was clear to Caroline that whatever was eating her brother was over now.
Or maybe she was wrong and she wasn't so good at reading her brother. Unlikely, though. That shout had been pretty indicative of his mood.

Taking the piece of paper, she put it in the pockets of her hoodie and smiled. "Thanks." It was a piece of paper she knew she would not lose. That was the only thing letting her go; she wasn't going to go if she had to walk forever, stumbling and intoxicated. As fate would have it, she was glad she had been caught up in that storm and had pushed her into this small cafe. It was leading to her finally being happy again.
She smiled as Emilio left, heard his yell and felt the blood rush to her face. Letting herself nod, she shrugged. "Nahh, I think he's still pretty upset about something,"she mumbled jokingly. Letting her blush fade, she cleared her throat and sighed. "It's so weird. Him and my ex are so completely different, I don't even know how I'm attracted to them both. Well, how I was attracted to them both." Amorina looked at her empty cup and remembered what she was supposed to do. "Oh, I'll be right back again. I'm about to just grab a pitcher of that stuff."
Getting a pitcher, she poured some in her cup and smiled. "This stuff is amazing and I dunno what it is, but I'm gonna keep drinking it." She felt a lot better than she had in the past few days and smiled at Caroline again. "I have to say thanks. Ever since the big fight, I haven't really been all happy and excited and whatnot. I'm glad to have finally found some other friends than my cousin."

Caroline laughed too, knowing that Emilio would have showered and changed by the time she got home and he would be waiting for her by her door, ready to ply her with endless questions.
"Yeah... I don't think there can be anybody more opposite of a vampire than Emilio... he's a child of the sun- even if he seems in his element at night, you'll notice that it's usually with some illumination," Caroline mused, thinking of the few times he'd shown up in the middle of the night at her own door. He never really explained himself then, but she had never asked for why he'd come at such hours. The look on his face at those times had told her enough- that he needed company and light. And probably food.
She raised her eyebrows at the pitcher and at the thanks she was recieving. Caroline waved a hand in a gesture that said, "don't mention it" even as she was saying, "I was also in need of a friend. I'm very glad to have met you."
She reached out and picked up the pitcher, looking into it. "Hmmmm..." She shrugged and put the pitcher back.
Caroline's eyes wandered back out the windows, wondering if this steady downpour would stop soon. Even as this thought crossed her mind, the rain seemed to slow into a lighter drizzle.

She smiled again and looked down at the watch on her wrist. With a sigh and a shrug, she stood up. "I've got to get home and pack a few things. My dad's a healer and can fix this up in a seoncd." Making sure the address was still in her pocket, she pulled her hair back into the clip and pulled her head over her head. "Well, I'll see ya on Friday. I'll probably try to come around at five or so, if that's okay?"
[gahh, sorry so short ;-;]

"Alright. I'll be expecting you... and so will Emilio, I think..." Caroline chuckled at the thought. "See you then."
