And She Wondered Where the Insight Went...

Caroline laughed, liking Amorina's exuberance and spirit more and more. "It'll be great!"
Thinking about what Amorina said about the entire night thing, she nodded. "I'm about a street away. We can definitely stay at my place. That's a very good idea. I hadn't really thought about that."
Laughing again, she admitted, "Yes, actually, I think I can..." She added, "It'd be sparkly and pink and contrast well with his seemingly-eternal five-o-clock shadow... Which he might not get anymore if he was unmanned. Shame."
Caroline nodded. "I'll tell him that you needed to speak with him. I'm sure he'll find you before the festival." She glanced outside. "I'd go and get him now, but I think Emilio sees this kind of weather as perfect soccer practice weather. He said something earlier about finding some people to play with."
She smiled. "He lives in my building... and there's no doubt in my mind that he's already planning on going to the festival- if there's a social event, my brother's bound to be there. So if you want, we can go as a small group. I'd definitely feel safer with him around."

She was glad to have a place to crash for the night and pushed her now-empty cup aside. Excited wasn't enough to describe how anxious Amy was for this; she could not wait to finally have an actual night off, a night where she didn't have to worry about impressing anyone.
Looking outside, she rose an eyebrow at Caroline. "This is perfect practice weather? Can I ask how?" In most cases of any sports thing, whenever it rained, the games or practices were usually cancelled. How could this be anything close to perfect weather?
"That sounds great. I really don't trust Kenric anymore; if you're drunk enough not to realize that the sky is up, he'd probably jump on you like a lion on a gazelle." She shook her head. "Thank you, though. He's really nice, probably the nicest guy I've met here."

Caroline shrugged. "I think it's a man thing to want to get all soaked and muddy while running around and crashing into each other... like the guys who like to play football when it's wet out... Maybe it's coded into their systems or something. I, personally, cannot see the attraction."
Caroline nodded slowly, her eyebrows raised. "Kenric sounds dangerous. I'm as thankful as you are about not going out alone. I- I... It's a scary world, sometimes." Detail she would not give and a dark look crossed over her face before she changed subjects.
She smiled sweetly when Amy complimented her half-brother. "If it weren't for his apparent lack of the desire to commit, he'd probably be snapped up right away." She sighed. "Bobo... he's so immature for a person his age..."

"Soaked men. I can see the appeal,"she noted with a small smirk. Amy placed her head on her hands and gave a soft sigh, thinking about her options. She could easily dump Kenric and move on, but she did care about him too much just to up and leave. She could lead him on and then dump him once she knew she'd have another guy. She could go lesbian. Nah. Nothing seemed right..
Amy looked at Caroline, a little confused. "'A person his age?' He can't be much older than you, about twenty-five or twenty-six, right?" This made Amy sigh. Damn. He didn't want to commit. Amy wasn't the kind of girl you could act completely interested in and then just ditch her for another woman and not care. She took certain things to heart, and wasn't somebody who let their emotions not matter to her.
"Well, there's a downfall..." She groaned, putting her head on the table, her hands over her head. Wincing when she tried to clench her fists, she just let her hands hang there. "Why can't men just be easy? Is it so hard to actually care about one person and one person only?"

Caroline laughed again (it had a sad sort of edge to it), but managed to say, "You're about seven years off for my brother- Emilio is thirty-two and I'm twenty-eight. It's flattering that you thought us so young, though."
Caroline sighed, her eyes catching on a figure caught in the rain. Despite the miserable situation he must have been in, he kept walking towards wherever he wanted to go, his suit sticking to his limbs and his hair slicking down to his scalp.
He had the potential to be cute, but it was impossible to tell for sure from this distance and with this weather.
"...I don't have any idea..." she sighed, turning her as-of-yet unreturned to teacup in her hands. "They are so infuriating sometimes..."

"Seriously? No way. So you're telling me I'm attracted to a guy ten years older than me?" She shrugged. "Eh, I can believe it..." It wasn't an odd thing for her to date older people. She had been attracted to a vampire, come on. It just surprised her; they didn't look much older than her at all.
Rolling her eyes, she gave a small laugh. "Sometimes? I think they start it up once they live the womb,"she muttered, feeling her clothes. She was dry once again, thank the Heavens. Amy hoped she would be able to stay here until the rain died down; she didn't have an umbrella and lived a few blocks away.
She gave a small, "Hmm."
"Well, it looks like I'm right back where I started on this manhunt: nowhere."

Caroline shrugged. It wasn't unheard of- and Emilio looked a lot younger than his age. "What a shame..." she clucked and shook her head. "Oh well. We just have to be firm with them... and know when to call it quits and start over."
She smiled encouragingly, "I'd venture that you are not exactly where you started... Your experiences set you farther away than you were." Caroline sighed at her inability t express exactly what she was thinking. It was so hard nowadays, everything mixed up as it was in her head.
Perhaps it was premature senility? Her eyes drifted outside again, but the man caught in the storm was gone.

[Homigosh yessss]
She nodded in agreement. "But we never do know when to stop with one and move on. We're always so in love." Amy snorted, looking outside. "I've been thinking about giving up on love. It'd make life easier."
"You can say that again." Letting her hair down, she sighed at it's curls and sucked her teeth. "Damn men."

Caroline shook her head. "Trust me, giving up on love is harder than it sounds." She would have elaborated, but there was more movement out in the storm. She squinted at the brown-and-white clad figure... then she realized who it was. She clapped a hand over her eyes- he'd been headed their way.
"Ay, Dios mio..."
And that was the only thing she had to say as her brother burst in, laughing in exhiliration. He was mud-streaked and soaked to the bone, but didn't seem to notice that at all.
Half of his face was covered in the brown dirt-water mix and it caked into his hair, making it stick out at extreme angles. His shirt and loose shorts stuck to his leanly muscular frame and what wasn't muddy was slightly see-through because of the water.
The barristas were scandalized. Emilio, however, just gave them a grin. His eyes touched on Caroline first... then the woman she was sitting with. At that, his grin faltered for a moment. Emilio, however, was not going to make an issue of his ending of a potential relationship. He placed a couple of soaked bills on the counter and ordered a coffee. Black, no sugar.
Once that was settled, he dragged a chair over and straddled the chair next to the two women. "Hola!. Como estan?"

Amy gave Caroline a very confused look and was about to ask what was wrong when she saw him. Muddy, soaked, laughing... Gorgeous. Her head gave a small wimper and she glanced down at the cut on her hand. She gave a sigh and looked towards the window, thinking, wondering what he was doing now. If he were out there, in the rain... No, wait, she had to stop. This wasn't right.
Her attention was averted from the window when she heard the familiar voice beside them. She gave an almost unenthusiastic smile to Caroline, and a more convincing smile to Emilio. "Hello Emilio." Hmm. Well. This was a very akward situation for her; she hadn't seen him since their oddly-ended date, and she still had that odd feeling that he was no longer interested in her.
With a small struggle, she managed to say,"It's good to see you again."

Emilio was completely unfazed. Yes, there was an air of awkwardness and he caught a look his sister gave Amorina- they had probably been talking about him, but why would he make things even worse by acknowledging any of this?
Instead he listened as his sister added a quiet, "Bien bien. Need to use the ladies' room, I'll be back in a few."
Great, she was leaving him with Amorina, who looked as lovely as he remembered, with her vibrant eyes and cornsilk-hued curls. Gracias... he thought sarcastically. Still, he managed to maintain an amiable smile and said, "... you also, Amorina. How... are you doing today? Oh... wait... creo que... I already asked, yes? Lo siento. A bit... no thinking today." He laughed, but it was kind of nervous and he added, "You look great."
He was dripping and very thankful that there was some sort of radiator nearby. Otherwise his Cuban blood would have revolted. Unless he was moving around and exerting himself, cold did not agree with him.
It kind of hurt to see this woman now, even if he had resolved himself to being only a friend if she wanted to have anything to do with him. He'd seen her eyes as she looked at the pale man near a river... those eyes could never really be his.
To Hell with having nothing to do with her, though. He would get over this heartache and have an amazing woman for a friend and be happy at that!
---
Meanwhile, Caroline was taking her time about going to the restroom. She had felt that whatever Amorina wanted to say to her brother, it wasn't her business. No need to encroach on a private matter...

Amy watched Caroline leave, a little thankful for the privacy, but more worried. What was she going to say? "Hi, how have ya been since we went on a date and never saw each other at all?" Listening to him repeat the question, she gave a small nervous laugh as well and shook her head. "It's okay.. I don't think I ever answered anyway. I've been... Not so good. Met an old boyfriend, fought with him, and I doubt I'll ever see him again." Forcing a smile, she shrugged. "Other than that though, I've been great. How about you?"
Noticed how he was wet, she looked to her right, where the heater seemed to be. "Do you want to sit here? It'll get you dry fast." It was her manners that made her ask, though most of her was happy to see him soaked, dripping, dirty... Catching herself looking him up and down, she looked down ather hands, toying with them, trying to make sure she didn't blush. Damndamndamn.
She thought for a minute, and slowly muttered, "Can I ask you something?" It may not have beent he right moment to ask, but she needed to know why he had seemed distant at the end of their date. Something had been wrong, and Amorina wanted to know if she had done something.

Emilio shook his head. He would have felt slightly cold no matter where he sat. It didn't sit right with him that she'd come to hurt after what he'd seen. She really cared for this ex-boyfriend of hers... and it was clear, even behind her smile, that the argument and the split had been painful for her.
"I am fine," he replied, catching her eyes on him. He thought she was looking at his clothes. If he was the type to feel self-conscious about his appearance, he would have blushed or shifted his position so that the mud was less noticeable. But Emilio did nothing but attempt another smile. "I was... playing futbol... soccer, I mean."
He ran a hand through his hair, but that only served to make it jut out in a different way. Droplets clung to his face and streaked the mud. Emilio's eyes followed her gaze as he said, "I sorry you... no feel ha- Que es eso?" He was looking at the very nasty-looking cut on her hand. He hurriedly dried his hands on a napkin and reached out for her hand.
As this went down, he absentmindedly said, "Si... of course... ask me..."

Amorina nodded at him, smiling. "I would hope you were playing some sport, considering all the mud." She didn't understand herself sometimes. How could she attracted to two completely different men? Kenric was cold, reserved, nervous, and she could never see him playing sports. Emilio was... Well, he was like her. He was romantic, could dance, could play soccer, was a lot darker than Kenny, the list was just endless. She couldn't answer it, except to say that she had loved Kenny, was getting over it, and that Emilio was the only other guy in her life. Those commitment issues, though...
Feeling his hand on hers, she gave a nervous laugh. "I broke something and tried to clean it up." Amorina shrugged. "Turns out that was an even worse idea." It was odd, feeling his colder hand on hers. It felt familiar, but it wasn't the same. When they had danced, she had loved not having to brace herself for the coldness she was about to experience on her skin. It was wonderful to feel another person's warmth.
While he examined her hand, Amorina cleared her throat. "Why... Um.. Why did you blow me off after our date?" She had almost just died the other night; being subtle wasn't going to be enough for her right now. She needed to know this and needed to know now. If he wasn't interested in her anymore, she would just have to move on.

"It... appears angry. I no like."
Emilio sighed, pulling away and leaning forward pensively against the back of the chair and placing his chin on his hands. For a few moments, he debated with lying and saving them both some awkwardness... but Emilio didn't trust himself and his broken English.
Finally, he said simply, "I... saw you con el otro... the one with... dark hair y... skin like milk. Near a... a river. He had... the love in your eyes. I no... not making... not get in your way..." He was struggling, with coming out with something that had hurt him so recently and trying to make it understandable in English.
The first time this sort of thing had happened, Emilio had had a hard time accepting that the woman in question would never give him eyes like that... Even if she did, it would be a lie. Emilio wasn't going to pursue that sort of relationship- it would only leave him with a bad taste in his mouth when he thought of the person truly in her heart.
He knew his flaws- jealousy was high up there on the list. Best avoid murdering somebody because he didn't nip the problem in the bud.
He dragged his eyes to meet hers. "Is... hard to explain... I no make things bad for... otros... is imposible que decir los sentimientos... I explain it diferently- is like you read un libro... you see characters... you think they like each other- espera que ellos- h-hope that they go with each other... but read more and find- they no go with each other. Solamente... only... I skip pages and find out very fast."
