Sam thought for the best way to explain his power to her, but could only come up with, "It's probably best to show you."
He bought the bird, paying almost twice as much as it was worth. Sam left a lead on its foot, but loosed it and let it fly as far as the lead would allow it to go. He studied the bird's movements, then tied the lead to a stand and took out his flute. This had been the last bit, the only piece of the Raven's puzzle missing.
Still keeping an eye on the bird, Sam began to play. The song was wild and soaring, capturing the onyx bird's essence and interpreting it in a series of notes, some soaring, some sharp and coarse.
Eventually, a point of darkness converged and it seemed like shadows melted from thin air and swirled into that point. It created a ghost of a shape, which condensed into a physical thing. A raven. It flapped about on the ground as Sam gained more confidence, then sprang into the air and flew. It wheeled and flapped, but always in ways that were natural to real ravens.

Art watched in aw at what Sam did with the Raven and his music. It was incredible, Art wish she had an ounce of musical talent but she had nothing. Thinking about her own power and how it was so generic and boring and common in the gifted world Art was a little jealous of Sam’s talent but it was overshadowed by her amazement. “That’s incredible” she breathed as she watched the recreation of the bird and how alike it was to the original.

Sam stopped playing, a light blush coming to his cheeks. He shrugged as the summoned bird melted away into nothing mid-flap. He put the flute away and took out the notebook again. He jotted down, "It's time consuming... a real pain to get it right... not exactly useful most of the time."
As he showed Artemisia the note, he tried to pet his latest purchase. It pecked him and he jerked his hand back, blood welling from slight cuts on the tips of two of his fingers. Ignoring the bird for the time being, he added to his note, "What can you do?"

Art shrugged “Whatever it’s still amazing, very unique and very cool” she said grinning and she watched the bird disappear. Even though he acted like it was a pain in the arse Art knew that he loved it, I mean how could anybody who plays guitar and loves music like that not love a gift that let you mess around with music?
Art’s mind however was quickly taken off his gift when he got pecked. Grabbing his hand immediately she turned it over and looked at it “Oh my gosh! Are you okay?” she asked worriedly then she glared at the raven “Stupid bird” she muttered and got a squawk in response. Sticking her tongue out at it even though it was very childish, Art realized that he was fine. Remembering his question she shrugged “Fire” she said simply.

Sam raised his eyebrows and a smile overtook his face when she showed her concern over his small cuts. He was flattered by what she had said about his Gift and that she'd reacted so quickly to such a minor change to his general well-being.
He wrote, "I am fine, really. It was stupid of me to do that without letting it get used to my presence. It's still a wild animal and I need to treat it as such. So... you're a fire elementalist? That's neat! Can you make it yourself or do you need to have a match or striker or something? What kinds of things can you do?"

Art nodded “Yeah, well it still didn’t need to peck you, it could’ve just squawked at you or flew away or something” she muttered still glaring at the bird. Still looking at the bird she shrugged “Yeah, I guess it’s not as unique as yours, trust me I’ve met plenty of other fire elementals” she finished and created a ball of fire in her hand. Tossing it back and forth between her hands she shrugged again “I can pretty much do anything with it, but it can still freeze or get doused out with water” she said making it into a snake and it slithered around the raven. The raven freaked out and Art retracted the fire thinking that is had learned its lesson.

Sam smiled and looked at the bird again, his eyes happy again. He wrote down quickly, "You're the first fire elementalist I've ever met. What you do is fascinating to me. It's beautiful, but powerful too. Have you ever gotten burned?" He paused and jotted down under that, "And I think I like the bird. He's spirited. I think I'll call him Rook. Well... in as much as I'm able to call him by a name."
He smiled jokingly at this, and rubbed the back of his head, unsure of whether she'd catch on. His meaning was that he actually didn't need a name for the raven because there really wasn't a way he could actually speak it. He'd have to rely on other people to get the bird used to a name.

Art did a little bow “Well then I am honored to be the first you’ve ever met” she said with a little smile. Shrugging she looked at the bird again “Nah, its kind of hard to get burned, only if you lose control of the fire or if the fire around you is to strong for you to control…other than that its pretty difficult” she said simply. Still looking at the bird Art cocked her head to the side and said thoughtfully “Rook…I like it” she said nodding, then she realized “Wait…is that a joke?” she asked uncertainly not wanting to offend him or anything.

"It was... a bad one. My sense of humor is... not used often. I apologize." He placed a hand on his chest in mock-sadness.
Something occurred to the boy and he turned to the vendor. Some more money exhanged hands and soon Sam was carrying a cage with a very disgruntled Rook in it. He'd remembered that most schools wouldn't accept pets. Even the caged bird could be pushing it.
"Would you help me out? I heard that ravens could learn to speak if trained right... I'd like to try, but... well, I think you can understand my problem. All you'd need to do is talk around him. Not even talking to him. You could talk to me."
He turned red, realizing how choppy his note was getting, and added, "But only if you want to. There's no pressure or anything."
He stared at the note for a second and reluctantly showed it to her, feeling as awkward as he could possibly feel.

Art shook her head “See, I don’t listen to music and you don’t use humor. We both have something to teach each other” she said lightly.
Raising one eyebrow at his reluctance to show her the note Art read it then looked at him almost as if she was trying not to laugh. “Your cute, of course I’ll help you…not like I have anything better to do” she said looking up at him, because that’s what she had to do because he was so freaking tall! She pretty much just realized that and she felt really tiny, not all guys were that tall.

Sam was relieved, but the redness from before still tinged his cheeks because of the addition of the "you're cute" in her answer. He rubbed the back of his head again, a shy smile curving his lips upwards. He didn't feel the need to write a note for this, so he just nodded, feeling awfully silly.
After a moment, he jerked his head in a direction, his face questioning. It was like he was asking her if she wished to continue looking through the marketplace with him.

Shaking her head at his red face she nodded and smiled “Let’s go explore!” she said linking her arm with his and she dragged him along as she looked at everything and anything. Art was having a lot of fun after finally finding a friend to hang out with. It was pretty funny though how red he got when complimented him.
“So how did you end up at Foresta?” she asked after they had pretty much looked at everything and the sun was just starting to set.

Sam smiled and took out the notepad again. That day had been a good one and he was glad he wasn't the kind of student with an unbelievably sad past to inadvertently put a sad stamp on the end of it.
He scrawled, "My gift relies on plenty of study. I was teaching myself, but I couldn't do everything. I needed to go to a place that would provide classes that would help me develop my power and allow me to take classes I would have taken in a normal school. So I enrolled in Foresta."
Sam looked at that, then shook his head and drew an X through it all and wrote under it, "I was lonely. You?"'
He looked at her then, with the colors of the setting sun glinting off the copper in her hair and the fire in her eyes. Her gift was so fitting... She was a flame herself, gorgeous and glowing.

Art read the note “That’s so sad” she said looking up at him before giving him a hug, pulling back she looked at him again and smiled “Just seemed like you needed one” she said simply. Remembering his other question she shrugged “When my parents found out what I was they kicked me out, I ended up here by luck” she said nodding once she thought about it.

Sam watched her with eyes that spoke of sadness, but only after she told her story. When she'd hugged him, he'd let a happy grin cover his face briefly. Sam couldn't remember the last time he was hugged- hers had surprised him, but he knew then and there that hugs were good things.
He, in turn, wrapped his arms about her shoulders and pulled her close. Sam's expression was one of mixed support, hope, and unhappiness for her having been thrown away by her family. This hug was a little awkward for him since he initiated it, but he tried to be as careful as he could. When he leaned back, he mouthed slowly, "Glad you are here."
