The auditorium echoed with whispers and murmurs. The students’ wisp-like breaths were nearly undecipherable, but anyone who walked into the room would get an earful nonetheless. Rumours had spread amongst the school that a student had been attacked by a feral creature from the forest, one that was more ravenous than any previous attack. The student was said to be in intensive care, but no one seemed to have any further details than that. No one really claimed to have seen the incident or the aftermath, at least, no one did truthfully.
The whispers slowly died down when a short but dignified middle aged gentleman appeared on stage. His cane thumping against the hollow sounding floor quickly overrode all other noise in the air. His steps toward the podium at center stage commanded silence.
The man looked quite comfortable at the podium, like it was natural for him to be stood in front of one at all times. His solemn stone face gazed through the crowd, absorbing their presence with one look. Politely, he bowed his head to the crowd. “Good afternoon. Bonjour. Suostei” he spoke cleanly in his low throaty voice. “I’m Mr. Makara, your new secretary, and acting headmaster should Ms. Arias and Mr. Ivors be predisposed.”
“My introduction is not why you’re here” Makara added as he adjusted his tiny spectacles. He did not break eye contact with the crowd. Not to look down at his non-existent script, not for a moment of weakness. “I come with a message of urgency. Our time of peace with the creatures of the forest has passed. Our investigation is an ongoing one, but we have our certainties. The creatures of the forest have been corrupted. We haven’t determined a cause or source for it. What we do know is that it made them violent and stray from their territory. We’ve had a few enter schoolground, but they have been dealt with thanks to our campus police team.”
Makara’s head rose to better return the audience’s gaze. “What I am asking from you is your participation. To avoid any further incidents, any unknown creature even so close as the treeline is to be reported directly to campus police. Doubly for any creature with a red aura. Under no circumstances should you engage with these creatures. Please allow the campus police to do their job.”
“Effective immediately, students are advised to avoid the forest. We will not restrict access during daylight hours, but we warn students to be cautious. It is, however, restricted for students to be past the treeline of the forest after 7pm and before 9am. Any student caught within these hours will see detention time or worse for repeated offenses. This is for the safety of both you and your classmates.”
“We will keep you updated as we receive new information. Until then, stay safe, stay alert, and continue your studies.” he finished with a bow of his head. When Makara was done speaking, he slowly walked off the stage in the same fashion that he did when he first arrived.
