POWER Maverick is "infested" with a dark yet powerful breed of chaos. In its most threadbare definition, Maverick's ability is to tap into the uncontrollable force that flows through the universe; he can harness randomness and use it in a few specific forms of dark magic. Accessing chaos is no easy feat, though. The core of human civilization relies on people's ability to suppress and resist disorder for the sake of a larger structure. So, when disorder does emerge, Maverick is able to tap into it. It most often appears in the form of complex emotions or as a result of enormously to moderately disruptive physical events.
Generally, negative emotions are often the most complex, powerful and confusing, which makes them the best candidate to act as reservoirs for chaos. The more uncontrollable and/or panicked one's thoughts and feelings become, the more randomness can flourish and become available for Maverick. Even if someone isn't blatant about what emotions they choose to show, Maverick can at least sense that chaos is being generated. And, using the context of the situation, he can usually detect its source. When chaos becomes "physical," it's more in the sense that a physical, traumatic event has taken place and disrupted the literal order of things. Buildings collapsing, natural disasters obliterating small towns, or mass shootings are all prime and unbelievably bountiful sources of chaos, but their infrequency means that Maverick hardly is exposed to this much communal chaos in one place. More often than not, Maverick is forced to create or tap into small bouts of chaos, like passing by messy bedrooms or "accidentally" tripping a girl so that her papers are scattered across the floor.
He can also determine how strong the chaos is. In a person or a situation, Maverick always has a gauge of chaos that manifests as a rhythm. If the beat is soft and calm, which is the default tempo of everyday life, he knows that there isn't enough chaotic energy for him to feed. But, the more off-beat and wildly changing the tempo becomes, the more chaos is created. In this case, the quantity of chaotic emotion/action determines the strength of the chaos.
This ability comes at perhaps the highest cost imaginable. After the chaos infiltrated his body, Maverick was cursed to be its host and responsible for its maintenance. If he neglects to do this, his life will wither away with the disorganized energy. As a result, the boy must always keep a certain amount of chaos he's harnessed in his reserve, meaning that there is a limit to how much magic he can use from the chaos. He can feed on even the smallest amounts of disorder, but it won't provide him much use other than staying alive. He can control how much of the stockpiled chaos he wants to use, or if he wants to continue saving it up for a larger and stronger release in the future. There are three distinct forms of dark magic that the chaos can take.
Maverick's powers are only as great as the sum of the chaos he gathers. So, in the first tier, Maverick's abilities are pretty mundane. Basically, he can phase from one place to another, which allows him to cover about ten feet maximum of distance by disappearing and reappearing. But, it takes him a few seconds to phase from one location to another, and he has to wait for at least one minute after arriving at his desired location before he can phase again. Any ability that uses more chaos than the first tier uses stands alone, and Maverick is not able to phase when either one of those abilities is being used.
The second tier of his dark magic abilities require a moderate amount of chaos, not to mention a few other things. To put it simply, he can summon one of two demons from the underworld so long as he abides by a few conditions. Firstly, besides the fact that Maverick needs to have a fair amount of chaotic energy stored up to be able to access a portal to the underworld, he has to have an offering prepared for the demon that surfaces in order to force it to do his bidding. There are two demons he has direct access to; a hellhound and a wendigo. The hellhound is a large, black, wolfish dog with three glowing red eyes. It possesses supernatural speed and strength, as well as a few elemental (fire) abilities. The wendigo, otherwise known as a jikininki, is a Japanese spirit that devours corpses. Eighty percent of the time, the hellhound will emerge, but a couple of times the wendigo has appeared instead. Both of them require sacrifices, each slightly different from the other. The hellhound requires a charred carcass, and the wendigo requires a freshly bloodied carcass. Although these seem like simple requests, the demons have to make a choice once they emerge into this world; whether or not to sign a contract with Maverick, and it usually depends on what kind of sacrifice he's prepared. They sign the contract by accepting the offering, so in both cases this means consuming the carcasses. If they choose to sign the contract, Maverick is allowing the demon to stay in his realm for at least twenty-four hours, and they can also tap into his reserve of chaotic energy if they so desire. This shared link is a key component to the contract, and deters Maverick from using this ability too freely.
Since he's had the most experience with the hellhound and the wendigo has never accepted his offering/signed the contract, the hellhound is definitely the more obedient demon. But, despite his close bond with the beast, the demon can choose to overtake more of Maverick's chaos, or attack him, whenever they're displeased with how things are going. Like any undomesticated animal, these creatures can be unpredictably savage.
Finally, the third and most powerful tier is, to put it plainly, the most unadulterated version of chaos that Maverick can excrete. And, in its purest form, the chaos seeks to disorganize whatever order it encounters. Physically, the chaos starts to "leak" from every orifice on Maverick's body in long, black and spider-like tendrils. This includes his mouth, eyes, ears, nose, etc. Then, once enough chaos has been physically manifested to cover Maverick's body in a smoky, translucent sheath, the "storm" begins. The chaos swirls and dips and dives in completely random intervals, hardening into jagged structures and melting into a bubbling tar within a matter of moments. There is no definite type of precipitation that this mass of wind and darkness can conjure. Maverick is always in the eye of the storm, both protected and mostly in control of where it leads.
The hurricane of sorts is pretty sizeable, probably being large enough to consume half of a small hamlet/village house. However, at this size and power, comes an immense cost. First, Maverick has to muster up as much chaotic energy as he can without depleting his vital reserve. This makes the tier an incredibly deadly operation, because just a tad too much chaos without enough being fed back into him would be enough to end his life. And, there's no telling whether or not the chaos would completely and utterly bend to Maverick's will, putting him at risk of being attacked by the very thing he created. Also, the storm only lasts for approximately fifteen minutes at the very most, but a considerable amount of damage can be done in this time.
APPEARANCE Maverick isn't a bad looking guy, and he's more than aware of it. he stands at around 5'11', but he's quick to tell anyone who asks that he's a proud 6'0''. His body can be best described as a long, lean build with just enough muscle to attract the glance of an onlooker. Many dedicated hours of the gym don't provide him with too much gain, but it's just enough to keep him in shape and moderately attractive. He was genetically gifted with fair, clear skin, but he does suffer from the occasional breakouts every now and then. By maintaining a strict regimen of a healthy diet and moderate exercise, Maverick does his best to fit in with the naturally attractive traits that society promotes. Coupled with deep, chocolate eyes and thick ebony hair, he gives off a darkly mysterious vibe.
The boy's wardrobe also reflects his desire to look as fittingly normal as possible. He has to make a conscious effort to analyze the fashion trends of the times, as well as what normal boys are actually wearing. More often than not, he opts for a combination of the two, pairing a bit more tailored jeans and converse with a casual sweatshirt. Occasionally he'll wear a pair of sweatpants or two, but he opts for the cleaner cut look most of the time. His organization and control over the things in his life starts with his appearance.
PERSONALITY Maverick is, by definition, a sociopath. He lacks any and all empathy for others, and doesn't have the capacity to feel intimate emotions on a deeper level. But, he's an excellent actor. After a few minutes of observation, he can create a mask that perfectly fits into whatever social environment he's put in, whether that be a group of bustling jocks or a quietly huddled AP study group. As a result, Maverick is viewed as charismatic and thoughtful, taking interest in anyone and everyone whenever he can. He creates meaningful connections with people, and, when he needs a little bit of chaos in his life, slowly rips them to shreds. Maverick's manipulation of others is just subtle enough to make a difference, but gradual enough to his victims not to be too noticeable. If he can, he prefers to start, end, or at least meddle with romantic relationships, seeing how much more emotion and therefore chaos can be attached to them.
Internally, the boy is monstrous. He can sometimes become incredibly aggressive and reckless, fueled not only by his sociopathic tendencies, but also his need for chaos. The two go hand in hand, and when his reserves run low, Maverick's not above committing atrocities. As long as he can keep up a kind and welcoming front, he can safely carry out his crimes to their fullest extents. But the risk associated with this method forces him to use it only as a last resort, or when he's entirely sure that he won't get caught. Anything from thievery, carjacking, and even murder are enough to entice him.
WEAKNESSES Maverick's weaknesses are mostly beneath the surface. His inability to empathize with others has the tendency to bleed into his speech and actions, and puts him at risk of revealing his true colors. More often than not he can disguise it beneath a mask of charisma and an overall jovial attitude, but when it comes to more intensely emotional situations, sometimes he becomes awkward and unsure of how to carry himself. The obvious detachment he shows between the person and the situation can usually make for a very awkward encounter to say the least, so Maverick does his best to avoid them at all costs.
Along with this, Maverick's powers restrict him to an incredibly dangerous degree. Firstly, his listed and only publicly displayed power is the fact that he can phase to and from various locations. But, the other tiers of his powers, if he chooses to use them, are at risk of being discovered by Foresta's administration. His dishonesty could be the death of him, literally or metaphorically.
STRENGTHS Maverick's manipulative nature comes in handy when interacting with Foresta's student body and staff. He can usually finagle himself out of any compromising situations, and his charm sweeps most girls off of their feet.
BACKGROUND Maverick was adopted by a lovely young couple, who just so happened to be novice wizards. They were looking for a human child in hopes of assimilating more smoothly into their culture. Holed up in a small apartment in the midst of New York City, the pair, a ginger witch and silver-haired wizard by the names of Ethel and Quinn. Quinn, unlike his wife, longed to seek out any and all magic users that might be lurking in the crevices of human society. Humans were pathetically weak and boring, unable to better themselves at the rate that wizards and witches could. Ethel, on the otherhand, saw opportunity in casting her witch heritage aside. She quickly took up human-like hobbies like cooking and knitting, and she found their life absolutely charming and a better character-builder than the often lazy life of a wizard.
When Maverick fell into their lives, the couple was ecstatic. Ethel quickly enrolled him in every pre-education program she could, while learning some human mothering techniques herself. Meanwhile, Quinn had other ideas. He wanted a son he could be proud of; one that Ethel could fuss over with her fascination with humans, but also one with power greater than anything he could imagine. He'd just harness some general magic and inject it into his son himself. Rumor had it that this method produced much more powerful half-wizards than a typical, fully-fledged wizards. It was a bargain Quinn was more than willing to take, and it only took one night that Ethel was away for him to execute his plan. Before he knew it, he was speeding down the highway with his son strapped carefully into a car seat, and a plot coming to fruition.
Quinn hadn't prepared for what he was about to do, though. Only being a young novice himself, he didn't take precautions to ward off any evil or unharnessed chaos that might be polluting his immediate environment, and once he exposed Maverick's soul to magic infiltration, he was consumed with a terrible hybrid of chaos and dark magic. The screams of his infant writhing on the cool grass forever haunted the new father. Life had become irreversibly tainted.
Maverick was an uncontrollable child. He needed to seek out chaos to survive, and much to Ethel's dismay, he did everything from wrecking the house during a particularly bad temper tantrum, or throwing every plate of food he was given back at his mother. The couple were in a constant state of battle, whether that was getting Maverick to school, forcing him to behave in public, or even to the point of keeping on his clothes. Only Quinn knew what would calm him down, what would ease his son's pain. But Ethel became distraught. She blamed his chaotic disposition on her failure to act as a human mother, and Quinn was too afraid to tell her the truth in fear of being ostracized himself. Ethel was the only good thing he had left in his life, and he just couldn't bear to separate the two of them. Maverick, meanwhile, thrived on the tension his parents exuded, and as he progressed into gradeschool, the desire grew stronger. Sometimes he would lie to one parent just to incite anger in the other, and the amount of disorder he'd receive from the environment was nearly euphoric. Morality was almost entirely absent from his early childhood.
Still, it seemed pretty inevitable when Ethel filed for a divorce. She just couldn't cope with the fact that Maverick seemed to take to her husband much more than she ever could, and it broke her. Ethel moved out when Maverick was about fifteen, and he would be lying if he said he didn't have anything to do with this final severance. Quinn's intense range of emotions provided his son with a plentiful feeding ground of chaos for months upon months, and he was more than aware of it. The sheer amounts of pleasure Maverick received barred him from developing humanity and the ability to empathize with his father's pain. All that mattered was surviving, and feeling good about it.
In the end, with a broken family and a life constantly fueled with carefully premeditated chaos, Quinn sent Maverick to Foresta, not only to catch a break from the disorder, but also to try and reconcile things with his ex-wife. Maverick has greater and better plans than to stay with his "adoptive parental units," as he likes to call them. Having no emotional attachment to his home other than his father's occasional help allowed him to leave freely with all the confidence of a vagabond.
