The evening air was cool against Kemp's face as he strolled into the court yard. Today had been longer than expected, with moving into his new dorm and finding where all of his classes were located, he felt both physically and mentally exhausted.
He figured most students were either studying or had gone to the dining hall for dinner and had taken the opportunity to slip outside for some exploring and much needed silence.
Having circled the main building once,Kemp welcomed the serene stillness of the court yard with a soft sigh as he strolled over and sat down on a chilled bench. Evenings like this reminded him of his parent's farm with the sound of soft water babbling like the creek that used to run along the edge of their field. Perhaps if he closed his eyes long enough, he could pretend he was home for a while and fight off the longing feeling that tugged at his heart.
Leaning forward, he rest his forearms on his thighs before tipping his head back to see how low the sun had gotten. It had just begun to set and was currently hiding behind some of the many trees that surrounded his new home. Wordlessly he studied the grand giants with their many sprawling branches and broad leaves ,feeling as if they were going to start moving or talking to one another if he watched long enough. What if they had magic powers too??
He shook the thought from his mind and rubbed his right temple before lightly hooking his fingers around the arm of his sunglasses. The heavily tinted devices stood out boldly compared to his bleached white hair but he supposed now that he was at the academy, he didn't stick out like he did in his hometown. Drawing in a chilled breath, he released it slowly to ensure his mind was calm- knowing how his powers liked to shoot off at the slightest hint of distraction. Slowly, he pulled the glasses away from his eyes until they were no longer blocking his vision.
At first his eyes watered as they adjusted to the bright orange hue of the setting sun and the many contrasting browns of the trees and plants- but it was beautiful once they had finally adjusted. It had been a long time since he witnessed the sun setting in all it's wondrous glory. Having to shield his eyes from pretty much all types of light sources, it was nice to see real colors and shapes. without looking at them through specially treated glasses. Although he didn't like the strong amounts of socializing he would have to put up with on a daily basis, it felt good to be around others like him. It felt good to finally feel safe.
