The boat rocked back and forth as Elleko leaned over the side, watching the ocean below. She closed her dark eyes and inhaled the sea air--cool, salty, with a few hints of sand and coral and fish. It reminded her of home. Her acceptance to Foresta Academy had been one of the greatest moments of her life, and she couldn't believe she was moments away from entering the school. Finally, a place she wouldn't be hidden away out of fear of rejection or violence. Her insides twisted with a combination of excitement and nerves and her mind spun with questions: what would the other students be like? Would they be okay with having a classmate who was, for all intents and purposes, a sea monster? Would it be easy to make friends? What about her dorm? Would she have a roommate? Who would it be?
She wouldn't be rooming with a boy, would she? Gods, she hadn't talked to a boy who wasn't a relative in...well, she couldn't even really remember.
With the boat docked, Elleko bounced onto land with a grin that she quickly hid, knowing the sight of her sharpened teeth set most people on edge. The light breeze fluttered her dark hair and white summer dress as she walked towards the school, bag slung over one shoulder, suitcase in one hand, and acceptance papers in the other. Her tail flicked back and forth with every step, curled upwards slightly so its shark-like fin didn't brush against the ground. By the time she made it to the courtyard she was practically bursting with excitement but stopped dead, anxiety taking over in an instant. Where was she supposed to go from here? She didn't have a map of the school, and the idea of asking someone terrified her. She was sure she was the least human-looking student here--she had to be, she was a fish, for heaven's sake--and she had no idea how people here would react to a shark-girl walking up and asking for directions.
