The cramps had become too much. He tried to stay above the surface of the water while yelling for help, but he sunk like a rock. With his last conscious moments he looked to the rippling surface of the water from underneath and asked himself: Is this the way I die? Then, a few seconds later, he lost consciousness.
[Flashback]
Dirk was bored. The type of bored that allows people to do stupid things in very idiotic ways, so as a result by the time he had noticed that he had entered the forest he was prepared to go to the beach, even though it wasn't an extremely warm day. He had packed large amounts of food, some carbonated drinks, and a beach towel among other things.
As he had reached the beach he had felt the soft white sand on the bottoms of his coarse feet, if dirk had to be Quite honest, it was pretty nice, feeling the grains find their way over his feet and through the space in between his toes. The beach was quite serene as well, not as windy and wavy as one would expect in the middle of spring, but not unheard of. Dirk set his belongings down and set up his beach towel and pulled out a large umbrella that he had found on campus. With some difficulty, he managed to open it and stake it in the ground so it shaded the spot at which he had set up.
Dirk looked at his special set up and smiled a little, it had required some effort to get the umbrella into the ground, but it made his spot that much better. He sat down and rummaged inside his bag until he found a slightly mushed sandwich at the bottom of the bag and a Coke which he had found one day and never really knew where it came from. The sandwich was simple ham and cheese and while it wasn't the most appetizing sandwich in the world it did the trick to nub his growing hunger. After he had finished his sandwich he downed the Coke, pulled off his clothes (other than some board shorts that he had on earlier) and jumped into the water.
It was cold at first, but he got used to it as he waded deeper and deeper into the water. 5 ft.... 10ft.... 12 ft....... It hit him like a bus, the cramps. He hadn't followed the adage of waiting for 30 minutes after eating before one gets in the water. It hit his stomach first, bursting pain, then his left leg, even more pain, and finally his right leg. He then yelled out
"Heeeelp, Im....... Drowning...."
[Flashback end}
The last conscious thought he had before slipping into the comforting darkness, though hopefully not death, was will I be saved?
