Mika took a deep breath as she entered the courtyard, the wind catching a few of her feathers causing her wings to twitch slightly. She was wearing a knee length long sleeved black dress with subtle silver detailing and a choker with a ruby colored stone in an onyx colored setting. After a few short moments the girl shook her head, her silver hair falling over her shoulder, before looking up at the school in front of her. "I'm actually here." she murmured under her breath. Stormy eyes remained fixated on the doors at the end of the courtyard. She truly didn't know what to expect, she'd never actually been to school before in the traditional sense. Most of her education had come from learning what she could on her own from books at the orphanage. Still she was quite nervous and her wings folded against her back.
As she looked around the courtyard, she tried to take note of any landmarks she could use later until she had her bearings straight in the new location. The mid morning sun coupled with the breeze caused shadows to dance at the base of the trees from the rustling leaves. Momentarily enraptured by the shadows she set her two duffel bags and violin case on the ground beside her as a soft smile settled over her lips. Watching the shadows gave her a sense of peace, slowly easing some of the nervous energy that raced through her. Her wings slowly relaxed as she played with the hem of her skirt. A few minutes passed before she shook her mind loose and back to reality.
Biting at her lower lip she glanced around the area before her. "Now, I wonder which way I'm supposed to go...."

A tall boy was walking across the courtyard. He was Native in appearance, with tan skin and strong cheekbones. The wind tugged at his dark hair, causing it to whip about his face. His gray eyes stared distantly, unnervingly. He was murmuring something in an undertone to the dog that guided him. The friendly animal had black fur, and wore a bright orange vest with 'service dog' emblazoned across it. The dog stopped, having detected a new presence.
"Ash, what is it?" the boy muttered, sounding annoyed. Ash tugged at his harness, leading his master toward the new arrival. The young man's eyes seemed to focus directly on the girl. "Who's there?" he called sharply.

Feeling a gaze upon her Mika turned to see which direction it was coming from. At the sound of the voice Mika's whole body tensed, the feathers on her wings bristling slightly. Silent and heart racing for the moment, Mika took a quick look at the two standing before her. Seeing the service dog, a small smile twitched over her lips, before she looked up at the young man's face. Studying his face for a brief moment, she suddenly realized she had been silent until now.
Bowing her head slightly in greeting her voice stammered out, her stormy eyes falling back to the ground. "Umm....Sorry. Hello. I'm Mika. Mika Sasaki. I'm new to this school."

The older student made no indication he had seen her awkward gesture of greeting. He tilted his head, eyes narrowed in blind scrutiny. The girl sounded young, and afraid. What was she scared of? He wasn't that scary. Then again, he had never seen himself, so maybe he was. "What're ya apologizin' for?"
Ash shoved his human, looking away innocently at the resulting glare. His message was clear: be polite! The boy huffed and rolled his eyes. "Damn dog . . . m'name's Sheridan Mace. This little annoyance is Ash. You ain't the only newbie here. I've been here all of two days." Determined to make a better impression than his master, the wolfdog stepped forward, nudging Mika's hand in a friendly way, licking her fingers.

Mika bit her lip again and took a small breath as the boys eyes narrowed on her. Closing her eyes and gripping the hem of her dress for a brief second to collect herself, she was roused by the feeling of fur against her fingers. Looking down to see Ash lick her fingers a smile crept across her lips. Within a few seconds her fingers found their way to the dogs ears, scratching at them lightly.
She turned her attention back to the boy. The warmth of the smile she had given Ash lingered in her voice as she spoke again. "Sheridan? Its nice to meet you. I'm sorry for my introduction, I can't say that I've had many chances to greet people, so I'm a little rusty." She looked off with a far-away gaze for a brief moment. "Its nice to know there are other new people here. You said you've been here for two days now? You wouldn't happen to know where I should be headed would you?"

Ash closed his eyes, lips parted in the dog equivalent of a smile. Mika was a lot nicer than his master. Not that he was complaining, of course. Okay, maybe a little bit. But who wouldn't? His human wasn't exactly known for his kindness.
Sheridan shook his head, this time with a disbelieving chuckle. "Again with the apologizin'. I dunno where you're supposed to go, and I ain't the best with directions anyways. I only know where a couple of places are--the Pyxis dorm, the library, the entrance hall, yada yada yada." Turning his sharp sense of hearing on the area surrounding them, Sheridan wondered (not for the first time) where the hell all the people were. This was a school, but it seemed to be devoid of students and staff. Wait, they're all probably in their classes. I'll have to sign up for those soon enough.

At Ash's reaction Mika smiled softly. Instinctively she worked her fingertips around the base of his ears, enjoying the feel of his fur against her skin. She couldn't help but continue the motion, she had a particular fondness for the type of dog Ash appeared to be.
As Sheridan shook his head Mika's cheeks flushed slightly. She opened her mouth to apologize for apologizing, but caugth herself. She had become accustomed to apologizing first to minimize any potential backlash of her actions, deserved or not. Still she made a mental note to herself that it was something to work on.
As he spoke she rubbed the back of her head, although her eyes lit up at the word library. "I guess that may not have been the best way to phrase that question.". She sighed lightly letting her fingers filter through the tips of her long silver locks. However something he had said gave her a moment pause. I'm not the best with directions? It was slowly setting in that Ash's vest said service dog.
Suddenly Mika realized he had said a name that rang a bell. " Pyxis? I think that was the name of the dorm I am supposed to be living in."

"Hey, same dorm as me. That's convenient. I think the girls' rooms are across from the boys'," said Sheridan thoughtfully. He extended a hand at his side, grasping for his dog's harness. "Ash, get your ass over here." The command was not harsh or mean-spirited, but rather the natural way that the boy spoke.
Ash huffed, displeased at having his petting session interrupted. He looked up at Mika with big amber eyes before returning to his human's side. Sheridan felt the familiar sense of relief as his fingers wrapped around the harness handle. His dark world was no longer quite as lonely.
"C'mon," he said suddenly, starting to walk away. "I'll show you where the dorm is." He snickered at the irony of the situation. "The blind guy showing around the new girl. I should be a tour guide."

Mika giggled softly under her breath as she watched the look Ash gave her. The interaction between the boy and his companion warmed her heart. It was clear to see even as a stranger that the two shared a close bond.
"You're in Pyxis too? I would be very appreciative if you showed me the way.". As he began to walk Mika scrambled to pick up the few belongings she owned that had been sitting at her feet. She certainly didn't want to lose him so quickly. She threw one of the two duffel bags over her left shoulder and grabbed the other in her left hand. The violin case was carried on her right. Picking up a quick pace to catch up the few yards her feathers brushed against the bag over she shoulder as she walked.

"Ash, I hope to God you remember where the dorm is," Sheridan muttered to his guide. The wolfdog made an almost scoffing sound, clearly saying, 'Of course I do.' Ash strode confidently onward across the spacious courtyard, pausing at the entrance hall. His training had never involved the opening of heavy doors--and it was rather physically impossible to him to open it anyway. Sheridan, taking his companion's hint, reached out to search for a handle. When he found it, he yanked the door open with surprising ease. The elemental stood to the side, keeping the door open for Mika. He'd heard her carrying what sounded like a fair bit of luggage.
Sheridan's mind raced to remember the rules of socializing. Fuck it, he'd just say whatever was on his mind. "If you're enrolled here, then you must have some sort of power. What is it?"

Mika followed a few steps behind the two, giving them adequate space, although this was just as much for her benifit of keeping herself from bumping into them with her luggage. When they arrived at the door itself she couldn't help but stare. It had seemed massive from a distance, but up close it was borderline imposing. When the door swung open, she was struck with how he had opened it with such ease. "Wow...." The words escaped her lips without a second thought, her eyes widening to saucers for a brief moment.
As he held the door open she quickly made her way through the threshold, murmuring a quick thank you as she passed. Once inside she shifted the luggage on her shoulder slightly moving it into a comfortable position. She had just begun to look around when she was caught by his question. "My power...". She pursed her lips for a moment before she continued. "I have some control and ability to create fire and shadow. I tend to be the best offensively. Although I tend to have trouble controlling it in a less destructive manner.". She sighed softly as she said this, before giving him a small smile. " How about you?"

Sheridan felt a smirk tug at his lips at her reaction. Yay, he'd opened a door. 'Wow,' she'd said. He had to repress a chuckle as he and Ash passed through the threshold as well. But as she stated what her power was, he halted in his walk briefly, taken by surprise. "I, er...my power is actually similar. Except instead of fire, it's light. My strength lies in my shadow-bending, cause it's more defensive. I don't like--" He caught himself. "I don't use my light abilities."
Because people end up getting hurt, he added mentally. He internally smacked himself for even mentioning his light power. He hadn't used it in almost a decade--it could only used for attack. He knew that if he were to allow his brighter side to come to the fore, he'd lose control again. No, shadow was easier. Hiding in the darkness was easier.

As he came to a stop Mika turned to him. Her eyes widened on explanation of his powers. Someone else with powers in the same vein as hers? She had left the orphanage for just such a purpose, to find other like her who could understand the world in which she lived. But she hadn't expected to find someone with similar abilities so quickly. At the brief pause in his explanation the girl tilted her head, a few strands of hair tumbling over her shoulder as she did. She was at least perceptive enough to see there was something about his light abilities he didn't want to talk about, and far he it from her to push on a subject like that. There are reasons behind wanting to avoid such a thing, she could relate to that.
"I've.....never met someone else with powers similar to mine, at least...not that I remember." A frown settled over her brow for a brief second at the final statement. She knew there were voids in her memory, so she couldn't make that claim explicitly. However, she knew what kinds of feelings waited if she tried to poke at those dark spots. She shook her head lightly and gave him a small smile. "I'm not sure I've ever been able to consciously use my shadows defensively, it was never built into my nature. Maybe sometime you could give me some tips."

This girl was just full of surprises. Sheridan laughed "I don't think you'd really want to learn from me . . . I ain't very good at the whole 'teaching' thing.'"
Ash stopped abruptly, nearly tripping his human. "Oi!" Sheridan grunted, caught by surprise. He pulled experimentally on the harness, glaring at his dog. "What're you doin'?" Ash sat down where he was. He seemed almost to be disappointed in his friend.
Sheridan exhaled and let out a growl of frustration. "You want me to teach her, don't you?"
Ash stood back up and continued walking as a 'yes.' Sheridan shook his head. He would never get used to hisbest friend's antics. "Stubborn mutt."
Ash was amused. Stubborn? Well, he got it from his master.
Sheridan rubbed the back of his neck, knowing he was going to regret this. "I can, uh . . . give you a few pointers, I suppose."
(ooc: when they arrive, you can make a part 2 of this thread at the Pyxis dorm so they'll be in the proper setting when we continue.)
