Full Name: Sura Glenn
Gender: Female
Age: 12
Power(s): Sura was born with the ability to shapeshift into any animal she has touched. However, after years of experimentation, she has come to realize that this power has many limitations. One of the biggest ones is that the power can only remember the last five animals she's come into contact with. To deal with this, she keeps the five animals she has deemed would be most useful to her stored: a wolf she touched at a petting zoo (she was terrified and had to close her eyes); a water moccasin snake that came into her cabin during summer camp (the thing caused the entire camp to be shut down for the remainder of ths summer because the counselors suspected there were more and fumigated the place); a perigrine falcon she had a chance to stroke at the same camp; the family pet Sugar, a great dane (who recently died); and a horse she visited at the farm of a friend of her cousin.
The one other thing that has made this power difficult for her to accept is that she doesn't particularly like animals. Granted, she'll still squeal at a puppy, or alert someone if she finds a bird dying after crashing into her window, but avoids them otherwise. Although, that aversion has made it easier to not touch any other animal to preserve her chosen five.
Appearance: Though she is on the short side, Sura often walks with a tall posture to make herself seem more vertically gifted than she actually is. Her hair is pitch black, and often left down because she always looses her hair ties. With forgettable brown eyes and pale skin, the scar near her pert nose that almost looks like a tear track is her most definitive feature (even though she got it after falling down the stairs when she was young).
Sura enjoys wearing knit sweaters of all sorts. Most of them do not have patterns, excluding her ugly Christmas patterned one she only adorns during thr holidays. Even during the summer she refuses to change her style to accommodate for the weather. As for pants? She hates them. Instead, Sura wears a skirt to match her sweater, as well as black leggings and flats.
Personality: Sura tends to keep to herself, and has a tendency to forget about things. Although she's smart, her grades are always drastically brought down on account of her late or missing homework assignments.
When talking to a new face, Sura has two ways of dealing with them. The first is to be as quiet as possible in the hopes that they will get sick of the one-sided conversation and leave. This tends to be her default, and is used most often. However, if she s any reason to dislike the person, she'll dole out underhanded insults, flat-out ignore them, and had even walked away from a conversation. Although, she is trying to open up and reform herself.
It's expected that she doesn't make too many friends. However, the few she has stay very close to her heart. Those who have endured her frigid personality long enough gain a companion that will be fiercely loyal to them, support their decisions, listen and keep their deepest secrets, and is sarcastic and funny.
Being from a musical family, she is often found scribbling scores into her composition notebook. She loves to create music for the piano, her favorite instrument, with just a pen and lined paper. Because she has never been one for fiction, she has had a tough time accepting her true nature and coming to this school.
Weaknesses: The only thing Sura considers a personal weakness is how cold she is to new people. It is an instinct to be very closed-off from the everyone else, and is easy to fall back on. However, if she wants to make friends here and get the fresh start she needs, she'll have to work hard to reform that chilly aspect of herself.
That being said, she has also found many restraints in her power, excluding the two mentioned above. After more than for and a half hours in one of her animal bodies, she gets a weird feeling that she does not want to test, and changes back to her human form, where she needs to rest. The power itself is very taxing, and Sura prefers to sleep for hours after. Also, for some reason, the power won't work with people. Though she's tried and tried again, she can't shift into another human being.
Strengths: Sura prides herself on her music. The violin and piano are her main two instruments, but she can also play a few songs on the ukulele. Though she likes playing the classics, like Rachmaninoff or Schumann, her main joy lies in her compositions. Piano solos are her forte, but she also enjoys sonatinas or arrangements of common melodies. Right now, Sura is working on a long-term project: her first symphony.
History & Family: When Sura was four, her parents divorced. It was nothing dramatic. They just realized that they weren't compatible anymore, and decided to split for the better of her and her sister, Asana, who was five years older. For two weeks, the duo would stay at one parent's house, and then switch to the other. They became much closer during that time, bonding over the fact that they felt like it was the two of them against the world.
That is, until a year later, when Asana discovered her power.
Imagine Sura's surprise when one day, when they were playing in the snow, Asana leaned against a tree and it began speaking to her. Asana looked as startled as Sura, but recovered quickly and struck up a conversation with it. Sadly, they were only able to chat for a few minutes before the tree became mute again.
After the Incedent, Asana began to experiment with her newfound powers. She could animate just about anything, even though the connection would only hold for a few moments. Sura thought that the power was unbelieveable, and loved watching her sister bring the dolls to life.
However, the enthusiasm was short-lived. Asana decided that she needed to improve the power and began hunting for a place where she could better herself. Somehow, she heard about the Foresta School and sent in an application without her parents knowing. It wasn't until she was accepted that she told them that she wanted to pursue mastery of this power. Luckily, they were very supportive and allowed her to go when she turned eleven. She promised Sura that she wouldn't let her situation become more important than her sister, however, and the two called each other as frequently as they could. But one day, the calls stopped. The two did not talk until summer, and even then conversation felt awkward and forced.
Since then, Sura had begun to retreat into a protective shell. She'd thought of it as a mistake to let anybody get so close. Most of her friends distanced themselves upon realizing the change. She relied more and more on her music. Above all, she began to detest the academy that took away her sister and the very idea of magic.
Which is why it was almost impossible to come to terms with her powers. She discovered them one day when she was about the same age as Asana was at the Incedent. She was petting Sugar, when suddenly, a tingling feeling raced up her arm. The sensation shot across her entire body before she began to morph into the dog itself. She frantically willed herself to change back. Luckily, she was able to morph back into herself, through the ordeal was terrifying.
For a year, she didn't acknowledge the power. She had all but purged the memory from her mind entirely. It wasn't until her sister came home the next summer and miraculously rose a golem and commanded it to perform a ballet recital before putting it to sleep. Sura realized that she might be able to use the magic that they share to reform the bond they once had. She decided to train on her own for a year to finish up fifth grade and apply when she turned twelve, though it was hard for her to forget her resentment of the school. Now, she's ready for her first year and Foresta with one goal in mind: to get her older sister back.
In Character sample: Sura never saw what her sister loves about the library. The smell of the pages wasn't too remarkable, and there was an overwhelming amount of books. How can one person possibly find the one they're looking for.
But the quiet enchants Sura. This has to be the one place where there are no loud voices. No students screaming or furiously making out in the hallways. No teachers interrogating classes, or dull subjects fogging her mind. Nobody was expecting anything from anyone. That part she liked.
At least, until she heard the door swing open and close. Heavy footsteps echo through the once-tranquil place and destroyed the perfect silence. Which made Sura nearly growl. Wasn't she just going on about how her one favorite part of the library was the quiet?
The footsteps came closer and closer. Suddenly, they paused behind her, as if the person making them had seen her hunched over the table, furiously scribbling in her journal. Then, they walked over to her table. And sat down.
Sura dragged her head up to the unfamiliar face. Instead of telling them to leave, as she would like to, she decided to try out this whole "reformed personality" thing she's been trying.
"May I help you?" she asked frostily, then winced internally. Perhaps not that reformed after all.
