Full Name: Aoife Ó Síodhacháin (Pronounced EE-fə O SHEE-uh-chun, where the 'ch' is gutteral, as in “Achmed”) Gender: Female Age: 15 |
Power(s): Aoife was born with Electrokinesis, though she didn't realize it until significantly later. It manifested at a young age through particularly strong static discharges, feedback in electrical devices, and headaches around sources of electricty. All of this went pretty unnoticed behind her personality. Specifically she has three defined abilities: Macroscopic control of electricity, Microscopic control of electricity, and the ability to sense electrical currents.
1) Macroscopic – On the large scale, Aoife can control large amounts of electrical current, almost to the point of lightning bolts, if she has an external power source to draw from. She can channel only enough electricity from her body alone to create a current strong enough to render someone unconscious, if placed properly. After such a feat she must either wait several hours to recharge, or draw from a power source.
2) Microscopic – On a smaller scale, Aoife can manipulate small electrical currents, specifically biological. She finds it impossible to manipulate inorganic sources of energy, but for the purpose of absorbing it. With this fine control, Aoife can create illusions affection the five senses by influencing the central nervous system, and affect the body's function slightly, though nowhere near enough to create anything resembling 'mind control' Her ability in this area has some limits:
She cannot affect more than two of the body's senses at once, enabling someone under illusion to recognize that they are, in fact, in an illusion.
She cannot control the body, so much as disrupt it's funtion
She has little to no effect on the autonomus nervous system, as those impulses are much more difficult to sense and influence.
she can only affect one body system at a time
This ability also takes large amounts of external energy. She cannot maintain illusions or other effect for longer than ten minutes or so without an external source of power.
3) Electrical Sensing – Aoife also has the ability to sense electrical currents in objects, both biological and inorganic. She needs to be concentrating to use this ability, or she overloads herself. Sometimes sensations still leak through in crowded areas, or near high-voltage lines, causing a slight headache. Sometimes if she is surprised, her control slips, causing symptoms of overloading, which can range from a slight buzz in her mind, clouding her thoughts, to headaches and nausea. They can even go so far as to cause her to pass out.
As of now, her powers are still developing, and she has imperfect control over them. She has not yet discovered her microscopic abilities yet, and has not fine-tuned her macroscopic abilities.
Appearance: Standing at Five foot, two inches tall, and weighing in just shy of 8 stone (just under 112 pounds for you American folk), Aoife doesn't cast a very intimidating shadow. Her long black hair hangs to her lower back when down, contrasting with her pale Irish complexion. She has narrow shoulders, fairly narrow hips, and an even narrower waist. Her legs are lean, built like a runner's from years of climbing many trees and walking many trails. She tends to 'dress down' (ie. destroyer jeans, shorts, and simple tops) to avoid any appearance of wealth., though she can occasionally be caught in labels. She has no standby for her hairstyle. Braids, buns, ponytails, or long waves of black hair are not uncommon. She also tends to shy away from makeup, aside from the rare eyeliner.
Aoife tries to carry herself inconspicuously, to hide her upbringing, Until a time comes to show her pride. She will walk, hunched over her books until she perceives an insult to her or a friend. It is then that her background shows and she can become standoffish stuckup, and cocky, even among the most popular people in her presence.
Personality: Aoife is a bit of a bookworm. She enjoys reading and other intellectual pursuits. It's not uncommon to catch her playing, chess, go, checkers, or even messing with a Rubik's Cube. She enjoys hanging out in libraries where she can indiscreetly indulge her adventurous side until she can go outside and really explore. Though she tries to hide it, this can often cause her to talk down to people. She has a bit of a pride streak. She knows she is intelligent, and often right, and she enjoys it. She will go to great lengths to prove herself to someone. She used to aspire towards being a scientist. Specifically, she wanted to work for the CDC. With the discovery of her abilities, however, she has become unsure of her path through life.
In speech and demeanor, Aoife is often sarcastic and witty. The first to make a quick verbal retort to someone else's mistake. She keeps out of crowds, preferring instead small groups and close communication. She will defend her friends, even to her own detriment. She will take punishment and blame, or even defend them physically, despite her small stature6. She is not afraid to offend those who speak out against her or her friends. When she feels so inclined, she also enjoys partying. The alcohol offsets the stress on her senses of being in a large crowd, allowing her to enjoy life and friends. She becomes significantly more extroverted when she drinks.
Aoife's biggest fear is primarily social. The most terrifying concept to her is being alone. She can become incredibly anxious when there is no one to talk to She is truly and extrovert in disguise, keeping to herself because it's necessary. Aoife has a physical fear as well. She is scared of bats. They would gather in her attic in large numbers. Once she had opened a door when she was young and found them rushing out at her, their leathery wings buffeting her body relentlessly. Her parents had found her screaming. Last among her fears is her fear of not being able to rationalize something. While not a phobia like her other two, it is still a cause for anxiety. She looks on anything she can't explain with distrust and suspicion. Even her ability and it's origins is cause for skepticism, as she had never encountered it before.
Weaknesses: Aoife is unable to control, draw, or even sense electricity when she is wet. Even just being damp from rain muddles her abilities. She also has several personality quirks that could make her vulnerable. She struggles to pay attention, and is quite hyper, and she also has a fondness for alcohol, which dulls her senses so she can let her guard down.
Strengths:
Intelligence: Intelligence is one of Aoife's best traits. She enjoys all of the pursuits of the mind, and with an IQ of 147, she doesn't have any trouble pursuing them.
Loyalty: One can say what they want about the company Aoife keeps, but she is fiercely loyal to her friends, almost to a fault.
Appearance: Though she isn't all that busty or curvy, Aoife has and attractive complexion and keeps herself well, taking pride in who she is, not where she's come from.
History & Family:
Aoife was born just outside of Dublin on a sprawling country estate to rich parents. Cared for by staff, she rarely saw her family, and she was an only child. She would adventure around the estate, dreaming of Fae and fantasy, climbing trees and otherwise amusing herself .She attended school up to the age of 15 at Alexandra College, where she had mixed reviews in her earlier years.
Aoife's grades were beyond excellent, but she had issues with the other students. She often suffered from headaches and would get into fights as she got irritable, and she would often get blamed for 'shocking' the students on purpose, like she was intentionally causing a static discharge as a joke. As she aged, however, she formed a tight-knit group of friends, many of whom were outcasts. Smart, poor, and only allowed into the school by charity. This helped her get along better, but it didn't come close to keeping her out of trouble. At 13 she discovered alcohol at a birthday party, and discovered that it did wonders for her headaches. This led to late night parties and more trouble with establishment. In classes she would do everything except pay attention. More trouble, more discipline. Then the day came when the school had had enough.
Her parents showed at school, saying that they had received a letter saying that Aoife would no longer be welcomed back. They blamed it on her friends. Those of “lower social status” were to blame All sorts of names were bandied about. Insinuating that they were scum. Not worthy of tying her shoes. Then things exploded. A buzzing had grown in her head, and the next thing she knew, computers had flames and puffs of smoke as they were over-volted, and the lights throughout the school flicked off in an instant. She shoved both of her parents, stunning them both to the ground, screaming in defense of her friends. How dare they! And she passed out...
Her parents stood slowly, shaking. Her daughter was one of them. The weirdos. In such a well established line. The headmistress handed them an envelope with a few sheets of paper in it. An application.
In Character sample: Aoife walked through the large doors of the school, the entryway deserted this time of the year. She felt the now-familiar buzz of electricity in the air around her as she searched for it. This would be her new home. A home away from a family who never wanted her anyway. She played nervously with her braid. Meeting new people was definitely intimidating. She left her bags to be carried to her room and followed directions toward the Headmistresses room. What kind of woman was she? Aoife wondered as she rested her hand on the doorknob. Nice? Cruel? Would she have abilities or be normal? More questions raced through her head about her new living arrangments. She sucked in a deep breath as she turned the knob and opened the door to the rest of her life.
