Full Name: Nikolas Kierkegaard (NEE-ko-las. Three distinct syllables, with the middle one short, as he will readily inform you)
Gender:Male
Age: 15
Power(s):
Nikolas was born with the ability to freeze all liquids, though some prove to be more difficult than others. Water, of course, is the easiest for the boy to manipulate. The greater the difference in freezing point a liquid is, be it higher or lower than water's, the harder it is for Nikolas to freeze. He can decide on the form of said liquids, his favorite being brittle, jagged, shards. However, he has been known - rarely - to choose a soft, powdery snow. Just last year, he managed to figure out how to split the water so that up to three different forms could be made. For example, if he froze water spraying from a hose, he can choose to make a third of the spray snow, a third hail, and the last third a solid block of ice.
Nikolas loves what he can do. While carrying around never-melting ice shards could be...fun, he must admit that it's not very pragmatic. Instead, the boy has developed a habit of lowering the temperature (freezing the water molecules in the air, really) around him by a few degrees, enough so that it's noticeable from 3 ft. away. The closer you get to him, the colder if will become, though not by very much. Surprisingly, Nikolas's body temperature is actually a half degree to a degree warmer than normal. It can be affected by warm weather, but it never dips below 37 degrees Celsius. Nikolas can also freeze the air around a specific person or persons, usually successful for up to 4 beings, given that they are bunched rather close together.
Appearance:
Standing at 5'10'' and still growing, Nikolas is tall and lanky. It's a look that he maintains with daily 3 mile runs. His gently tousled brown hair and pleasantly imperfect complexion have caught the attention of quite a few girls. That is, until they draw closer. His piercing brown eyes bore into the soul, cold and stoic. His mouth is typically set in an straight line, neither smiling nor frowning. It gives him the appearance of someone who would prefer to be left alone. At times, the corner of his mouth will twitch upwards in a thin smile, but it never reaches his eyes. However, his little sister - when she was alive, at least - swore that when he does smile with his eyes, it completely erases the apathetic persona Nikolas chooses to portray.
Keeping in line with his wintery theme, Nikolas dresses in blues, grays, blacks, and whites. Although he never gets cold, he keeps a close eye on the outside climate and selects outfits accordingly. His typical attire consists of jeans, a solid colored shirt, and a coat or sweater, depending on the weather. Except for when he is actually running, Nikolas will never be seen wearing sneakers. Another thing he refuses to wear is hoodies or sweatshirts. He believes they make one appear blue-collar, a look that this 'prep' detests.
Personality:
When asked to describe him in one word, most people would say (who would've guessed?) cold. For them, there is honestly no better word that embodies Nikolas. He rarely, if ever, smiles at anything. He appears to go through life in a detached way, accepting it all - good, bad, or otherwise - with the same frosty expression. As a rule, he is a quiet young man, but when he does speak, his voice is a rich tenor that doesn't really seem to fit the rest of him. He makes a half-hearted attempt at avoiding people, but when interacting with others, Nikolas is not one to mince words. He will say what he wants to say, and not necessarily what others may want to hear.
Nikolas is a very organized thinker. When he decides on a goal, he will plan out every step, no matter how long it takes him to accomplish what he wants. They say patience is a virtue, but in the hands of Nikolas, it becomes very dangerous. He has an excellent memory, and never forgets what anyone does to him, whether it's good or bad. This, coupled with his slightly warped sense of justice, has proven to be the downfall for too many people.
He has a particular obsession with proper pronunciation of his name. His first one, anyway. Other quirks include a fondness for sour-sweet foods and warm soups. Especially soups he made himself; it is probably the one thing he allows himself to be proud of. After all, there's no one else to compliment it; he keeps this 'warmer' side to himself, and only in his room. If one was to spy on I'm-Alone-Now-Nikolas, they would find a sad boy with a penchant for cooking and classic literature. A lonely boy with a deep ache in his heart.

History/Family:
Nikolas was born into a mixed blood family that already had twin boys, Erasmus and Evander, and a teenage girl, Katerina. His mother was half elemental elf and half human. His father was a quarter shapeshifter, a quarter elemental, and half human. One year after Nikolas was born, his mother gave birth again, this time to a little girl, Anastasia. Growing up, Nikolas was quite different from his brothers. While they were rowdy and incessantly sparring with one another, Nikolas would run outside and watch the ants carry their dead back home, or the spider spin her web, or even race the neighborhood dogs around the block. But he never got in a fight with another child, not even for fun. In fact, he seemed to flinch away from touch. His parents could only ever manage to embrace him for three seconds maximum. It puzzled them to no end, especially since their son hadn't had traumatic experiences with anything, really. What's more, Anastasia could fall asleep on Nikolas and he wouldn't mind. They put it to how close the ages of the two children were, and generally left it at that.
In actuality, Nikolas had nearly killed his sister by accident, when they were 6 and 5, respectively. The family was at a mountain resort by a lake that fed into a series of increasingly smaller ponds. Because the place was regularly monitored and dangerous-animal-free, the Kierkegaard children were allowed to roam free. Delighted to have the run of the place, Nikolas finally settled by one of the small ponds, where he was attempting to climb a willow tree. Out of nowhere, Anastasia came running by. She slipped and fell headfirst into the water. In an attempt to save her, Nikolas accidentally activated his dormant powers, and the whole pond froze over. It was then that his body temperature jumped up to it's nearly permanent higher degree. Luckily, Anastasia had inherited a few special genes herself, and discovered that she could breathe underwater. Reunited on dry land, Ana agreed to keep the near drowning a secret, a difficult thing for a 5-year-old, but they both managed it. When they returned to the lodge, Ana mysteriously dry and not a bit chilled, Nikolas realized that his raised temperature would be a dead giveaway to his parents who currently were on the watch for potential magic. If they found out, he would have to tell them the dreadful story. So there began his avoidance of long periods of touching. Except for Ana, because she already knew.
When Nikolas was 9 years old, his parents were called away on a mysterious trip. They wouldn't tell their children where they were going or what they were doing, but in the week leading up to their departure, they were especially affectionate to their children. They sent their two youngest to live with Katerina, who had moved out the year before. She ran a tailor where she was able to use her power of weaving charms or spells into cloth and clothing. The twins happened to be born without a drop of magical ability, but with clever minds. They enrolled in college two years early, just in time for their parents' trip. Nikolas spent lots of time with Ana, but never developed as close of a relationship with his elder sister. About 6 months later, the Kierkegaard children received a correspondence revealing that their parents had died. Killed, really. The three living in the tailor store went through the stages of grief like any child would. During this time, with the added pressure of failing to find his place in the terrible pre-teen social circles, the frosty, emotionless Nikolas was born. Then came the night of Anastasia's 9th birthday. Troubled by some neighborhood bullies, Nikolas couldn't sleep. He heard heavy footsteps on the stairs and slip farther under the covers. A low, crisp voice seeped through the door, claiming responsibility for his parents' deaths and promising to "get the rest of you too". Nikolas never forgot the sound of that voice. The footsteps went away, but as soon as they did a terrible scream tore through the night. Katerina slipped into Nikolas's room, wearing a cloak of deception, barred the door, and immediately called the police. They arrived just in time to catch Ana's killer.
For the next 4 years, Nikolas and Katerina lived a subdued life. They had never really had much in common, and both grew increasingly busy. Katerina found herself a fiance, while Nikolas quietly dedicated himself to vengeance, especially after he heard that dreaded voice on TV. Turns out the man had 'reformed' and was living a peaceful, albeit carefully monitored, life, only a few countries over. Nikolas bade farewell to Katerina and set off to put his plan into action. The one that he had started building, subconsciously at the time, the night he found out that his parents were never dead. Step one? Seal the rain-slicked homes of his bullies shut. Not permanently, of course, but just enough to cause a good deal of panic. Why? Because revenge is a dish best served cold. Nikolas finally tracked down the exact location of his parents' murderer, while erasing tracks of his own.
He set the authorities on a wild goose chase two months prior to him actually stepping foot on the property. That way, by the time he did enter the cozy home, he would not be seen by the limited manpower that remained. Sneaking up behind the peaceful looking, balding man, Nikolas dumped a small bucket of water on him and immediately froze his hands and feet to the chair, and his lips shut. Then, he made sure the man knew exactly who was standing behind him and why he found himself in such a situation. Finally, Nikolas took a spray bottle of of his pocket and carefully applied a thin sheen of mositure to the man's nose. He froze the water, sealing off the man's air flow. Every now and then a fresh layer of ice would be added as the ice melted in the heated room. Finally, the man died of asphyxiation. Nikolas allowed a chilling smile to crease his lips as he took the bucket and left the house. He was 14 at the time. The authorities would return to find a death scene that left them scratching their heads in wonder. The moisture had evaporated, and Nikolas had been careful not to leave any sign of his presence. For the next 3 months, Nikolas wandered the globe, doing good for those kind to him, and doling out pain for those who wronged him. Eventually, he ended up at Foresta Academy.
In Character sample:
Nikolas chirped as he sat in the tree, trying to mimic the birds flirting in the spring air. He loved being outdoors, and couldn't wait to return to his parents to show off his newly learned song. However, his thoughts were interrupted by a gleeful shrieking, and the boy frowned in annoyance. He looked down and saw his little sister gamboling about. He was about to the shout down at her to go play somewhere else when she took a leap and landed in the pond. Nikolas just watched, frozen in shock, as she failed about, putting more distance between her feet and solid ground. Frightened to death himself but recovered from his brief moment of paralysis, Nikolas quickly scampered down the tree and tried in vain to reach his little sister. He cast his eyes for some sort of stick that could extend his reach, but there was nothing to be found. If only my arm was just a little bit longer, or her arm a little longer, or maybe, if the water was solid so I could walk out farther. His panic awakened the powers lying dormant inside him, and suddenly the whole pond froze over, just thick enough for Nikolas to walk on, but increasingly thinner the further out it got.
Nikolas dropped to his knees and pounded at the ice, urging Ana to do the same. However, it proved too strong for either of the children to break, and Ana was too weak from holding her breath to try to swim to thinner ice. Much to
Nikolas's horror, she began to slowly sink. He could only watch as she fell deeper and deeper. It felt like his heart was sinking with her, and tears streamed from his eyes as he continued to pound the ice. Ana's eyelids fluttered shut. And then took a shuddering, gasping breath. Nikolas didn't dare to believe it at first, but as his sister moved her limbs in wonder, a wave of relief washed over him. He wasted no time in running to thinner ice, slowing as he tested the ice to make sure it would bear his weight. Ana managed to follow him from the other side, and together, they popped a hole open. Nikolas dragged his sister out, and the two collapsed on the soft grass that covered the banks, too startled to speak.

Weaknesses:
- While Nikolas can pretty much freeze anything he wants, he does not have the ability to melt frozen things. Not even a little bit. He can't even melt an ice cube by holding it in his hand. His body heat transfers to anything else normally, just not frozen objects.
- The strength of Nikolas's powers depends on the weather. On a hot summer day, it takes him three times as long to form ice, while in the chilliest winter wind, he can shape twice as fast. Because of this, Nikolas tends to spend his summers indoors, where it is easier to protect himself. As a general rule, low temperatures, wind, and precipitation strengthen. High temperatures, dry places/air, and high altitudes weaken. Strange weather like right before a hurricane makes him unpredictable. Also, when he's upset, he finds it hard to control what he's freezing.
- Nikolas is a sucker for sweet little girls, especially those around 8 or 9 years old. They can twist him around their little fingers faster than people running from a well-thrown ice dagger. He knows this but can't do anything about it; he sees his little sister in each and every one.
- Lemmings. The little furballs haunt his darkest dreams. Unfortunately, they seem to be quite attracted to him. Perhaps it's because he smells of winter.
- If it's one thing Nikolas is good at, it's making frozen weapons(and
using them!). After lots of practice, he can draw an throwing
knife-shaped piece of ice from the air. It takes a few minutes to do so,
but if using actual, liquid water, the result in almost instantaneous. - Enduring cold. It is impossible to freeze Nikolas to death. It just doesn't work. He won't even feel the temperature drop.
- While most people have either photographic memory, or phonographic memory, or just plain old memory, Nikolas has it all. Sounds, images, ideas, all of it gets stored in his memory vaults. This allows him to learn facts and faces extremely quickly, though it has not given him an insatiable appetite for knowledge.
- Something Nikolas does have an appetite for is good food. He is a very picky eater but is quickly on his way to mastering the art of the kitchen. Some people have comfort food, Nikolas makes food as comfort.
