Full Name:
Chevalier Jacques Curtis
Gender:
Male
Age:
Sixteen
Power(s):
Psychometry- the ability to touch someone or something and see its past (he won't see anything not approved by the player of the person he touches) / the ability to manipulate their memories
Appearance:
Chevy is a pale skinned youth who can't seem to hold a tan. He has light purple eyes that shine with an observant light all their own that is often reflected with the black rimmed glasses he wears. He has a boyish haircut to his brown hair, which is an attempt to make the highly intelligent kid look slightly less intimidating to the average onlooker. In the way of height, he's by no means the tallest person, but he does stand at five feet, eight inches, ensuring he isn't the smallest, either. His physique stands testament to the fact that he's rarely still and enjoys sports immensely. He isn't a weightlifter or body builder, but he is a recreational athlete.
When taking in his clothes, one will notice he wears mostly black or white. He naturally stays away from bright colors though he doesn't have a particular dislike for bright colors. He's also completely content wearing formal attire or other 'uniforms'. When he choses his own clothes, he is rarely seen without a jacket and it's even rarer to see him in a pair of jeans (yet, strangely, he's not particular; if someone told him to wear something, he wouldn't be too alarmed by the demand.
Personality:
It's been said in casual conversation that everyone has a bit of OCD in their personality. If that's true, perhaps Chevy is normal. If it's not, one might find his anxiety and attention to detail startling. If Chevalier could make the world perfect, he would. It seems to be his overarching, unattainable life goal. In the meantime, he doesn't fail to organize his own space in the world to absolute perfection.
Each action, especially when organizing an area, seems to satisfy his analytical mind with a very involved explanation ('the bed clearly has to go here, because the desk is there, and because Mayans believed such and such about the sun, and the window's right there casting light on the bed, bringing good luck' ect) that has little logical bearing. If you don't ask why he wants something a certain way, he won't tell you, most of the time, but he will insist it goes there. If it doesn't, expect a mildly anxious Chevalier.
More than anyone else Chevalier meets, Chevalier has a personal affinity toward children. Their natural enthusiasm and their desire for guidance seems to naturally ease Chevalier's spirit. More than anything. Chevalier wants children of his own, though he would never consider placing a child in an unstable situation, no matter how well he could protect them from the dangers of life.
Chevalier is a leader. He doesn't want to be, but in that refusal lies part of his strength. He doesn't try, so he can't try too hard to lead. He just as a level temper, a sense of responsibility for his actions and an analytical mind. Not to mention his attention to detail, confidence, charisma, and decisiveness, all traits people take note of and want to benefit from.
On the negative side, he's very secretive, very quiet, vengeful, suspicious, and guarded. He has no great desire to make friends and he makes no attempt to pretend otherwise. Chevalier is content without you in his life, it's you who'll benefit from knowing him as far as he's concerned. He guards his emotions rather than showing his temper (though, on ocasion, he can get mad- usually it's around his friends or around people he respects and trusts). Chevalier doesn't mean to be, per se, but he's very manipulative and sometimes selfish. By no stretch would one see him as generous to strangers, selfless, or a pushover

Weaknesses:
Having glasses is a slight weakness, because when he loses them, the world is blurry and his defenses go down. As far as personality, he has a tendency of being very quiet in social situations, which from past experience, gives people the impression that he's superior (or at least thinks he is) and disinterested. He's the type of person who doesn't seem to like you that much (usually) as just an acquaintance, but will adore you if you stick around long enough or do something to exalt you to friendship status.
In the way of power weaknesses, he finds his own memory is a little fuzzy at times, if not somewhat distorted. Often, when recalling his own memories, they seem to blend with the memories of others to the extent that he often doesn't know who he was or what he's done. It's like amnesia. While it doesn't always strike him, it's around most of the time, especially after he uses his powers or after he remembers something he views as 'painful'. To combat this, he does keep journals, but he's not honestly sure what really happened and what didn't. Just because he wrote it down doesn't make it fact to him. This further complicates his social encounters; he isn't being mysterious when you ask him about his past, he honestly doesn't know for certain.
Another weakness to his power is, occasionally, people can get visions from him. It happens at random as far as Chevy knows, but if he were paying attention, he'd realize it usually happens when Chevy's feeling a strong emotion and someone touches him without warning. The memories he shares aren't always his own, much less relevant to the situation or what he was thinking of at the time. They're just memories stored in his mind. This is fairly rare.
Strengths:
Chevalier's intelligence has served him the best as far as helping him navigate life, but his patience and his paternal nature have also stood against the trials he's faced to earn their praise. They make him who he is, as an affectionate, responsible friend.
His lithe figure has ensured he's not a fighter, but he can dodge a punch in a fight. Other than that, he doesn't have much strength in his physical appearance.
Chevy's power only add to his natural attentiveness. It suits him well (though some might argue it actually shaped him, making his personality a byproduct of his power instead) and makes him a very effective mediator, counselor, or simply a friend.
History/Family:
Chevalier was born a happy, healthy baby. But he was born the son of a highly respected scientist who used experimentation to enhance Chevy's mother's powers. Despite only having one gifted parent, Chevy developed powers around his second birthday. At first it was just a brief flash of an image he shouldn't have known about; his father as a child, in the middle of running through a field, away from a group of kids. Or his mother, as a child herself, hiding in a corner of a darkened room. As the years passed, he would catch more and more. Seconds turned into minutes, and soon, flashes could be like summaries of complex events. While he didn't get all the details, his mind seemed to take in a lot of information at once, then slowly piece it together over time.
Needless to say, as the son of a scientist, he was priveleged even if he was a subject himself. They didn't bother with any invasive experimentation, but they did rely on heavy observation and restricting him to the scientists compound. Instead of going home with his dad, he had a white-walled room with an ichy grey blanket on an old cot, with balled up cotton inside the black fabric. This was an improvement on the rooms of other subjects, though. And he did have a barred window that stood as the envy of the subjects he met throughout his life. Equally worthy of envy was the silver bracelet. It was his companion, providing him music, communication with the scientists, and of course the time. It was also a tracking device.
Chevalier thought he was going to be a scientist himself. He didn't know why he wanted to, but he knew his father respected the scientists, so he wanted to be like his dad. At times he could be just as cold and methodical as his father- he could do this. It didn't occur to him that he couldn't be friends with the subjects and be a scientist.
Chevalier was friends with most of the inhabitants of the building. Whether it was scientists who respected his father enough to humor him, or subjects who were too scared of what would happen if they insulted him, he was a popular person for all the wrong reasons. He had a lot of control and he was never punished when he had an altercation with a subject, even if he was the cause of it.
Everything started to change when Chevy was thirteen. Suddenly, the world seemed strikingly different than he remembered, and not only because his memories seemed to be disinegrating. There was something instinctual to his understanding, something he couldn't fully comprehend. Chevalier found himself identifying more with the subjects than his father, and more than anything, he found himself wanting to be accepted by them as more than just the son of a scientist. Most of the subjects absolutely refused to consider it.
But not all of them. A girl named Kairi befriended him. Her unconditional approval was refreshing and admirable. So Chevy and Kai became inseperable. The two kids spent two years in relative peace before rumors started. Apparently his friendship with her was grounds for her termination.
Kairi and Chevalier made their daring escape without a second thought. Chevy wouldn't let anything happen to Kairi, no matter what it cost him to protect her. His entire life was left behind so he cound venture into the world and save the life of the one person that mattered to him. The two had no idea where to go. For an entire year, they relied on the kindness of strangers as they made their way from a secretive compound in France to the Atlantic coast.
From there, they found themselves working in the small coastal town until they had enough money to board a ship. At the time Chevy just wanted to get as far away as humanly possible. It was only after they boarded the ship and set off into the ocean that the direction became clear. There was something worth risking his life for, and it happened to be in the middle of the ocean. After some arguing, the duo jumped together from the stern of the ship and began swimming with Chevalier leading.
Chevalier was right. They were within half of a mile of the island. By the time they reached the coast, Kairi was unconscious, her skin bright red from the sun. Chevalier was burnt himself and exhausted as he carried Kai onto the shore. But they'd arrived, and for once, Chevalier felt safe. But he couldn't say the journey was worth the pain he'd put Kairi through. Though he prided himself on being patient, he felt he had acted far too impulsively and uncharacteristically. For that mistake, he is fairly certain he'll never forgive himself.

so far away when
The night was clear, the moon was providing just enough light to find the sea shells and snails of the lake, and the fireflies buzzed around in the mason jar beside him, reminding him of home. At the present moment, the blond teenager was laying at the lake's edge, using the fireflies to light the pen ink on a letter from his host family. It contained the pleasantries he expected, revealing no truthful agenda he assumed they had.
"Meeting you has been a-
Except, it was, and the small Brahminy blind snake was now clearly visible to his left. It looked like an over sized centipede, but he knew better.
"No!"Xavier yelled at the snake, his voice piercing the quiet of the night with a higher pitch than he was proud of. "Go away!" Despite Xavier's yelling, he was the one that jumped away. He stared at the snake, his letter, and the jar of fireflies from a few feet away, his left hand pressed to cover his mouth as the horror of the situation sunk in. Without giving it a lot of thought, it occurred to him that he could negotiate with this... thing.
"Hey, okay, I'm sorry."Xavier stated diplomatically. "If you just turn left, we don't have to worry about this anymore. It's okay, you can visit the water, I won't miss you. Just leave my things alone, okay?" Xavier's voice wavered, despite the logic that he wasn't in any danger. The snake moved very slowly and had no means for jumping or surprising him in another way. In fact, it was doubtful the creature could even bite him if it wanted to. It's mouth was far too small to do much damage.
A chill of fear still coursed through Xavier's spine. His voice quivered, his heartbeat was accelerated, and his breathing was short. The notion of the snake on the ground (and how many were unseen elsewhere) had the sixteen year old petrified.[/blockquote]
