An odd pounding in Sandra’s chest shot her eyes open. The fact that she had somehow found herself in the nurse’s office had barely passed her mind whatsoever given the immense pain that was quickly building up from within her rib cage. She began to squirm in place, her eyes continuing to widen as though someone was forcing her lids open. Her breaths were erratic and as time went on they became weaker and weaker. Without a moment’s notice, her shirt was scorched a blaze as some sort of fiery creature burst from Sandra’s torso and began to pull itself out from its mortal prison.
A mere second later, the teenager snapped awake, going so far as to spring up from her resting position. Her instant reaction was to grasp at her chest to be certain that the last thing she saw was in fact not real, though the rate at which it was pumping made it somewhat difficult to accomplish. Once assured though, her hectic gasps for air slowly began to quell and her tunnel vision was quickly cured. “I fucking hate fake out dreams…” she rasped as she wiped the sweat from her forehead clean.
Her head subtly began to investigate the room around her. After snatching her glasses from the nearby night stand, she realized she was indeed in the nurse’s office, more specifically laid out in one of the many beds around the room, though hers was in a secluded corner surrounded by a small collection of portable space heaters to accommodate for her special bodily needs. “I’m actually in the hospital? What the hell?” she whispered to herself as she wracked her brain for the memories of what happen before she fell unconscious. She wasn’t quite sure. The last moment she remembered was being in the ballroom prepping for a shoot and then Stella showed up.
Either way, her mind was not left to ponder for too long as somebody at the nurse’s desk noticed her rather hectic awaking. Sandra had only met the nurse on very brief occasions, so she might not be able to remember what they looked like specifically, but as far as she could remember she wasn’t a giant bug monster. She knew well enough that the thing was a teacher though and perhaps she could explain what was going on.
“Good, awake” the insectoid opened with as she approached Sandra’s bedside with a clip board clinched in her deformed hand. Taking note of Sandra’s rather confused complexion, Lotte quickly explained “nurse on break. Was in area, leant expertise.”
Sandra’s jaw cringed at the line of ‘leant expertise’. Quite frankly though the fact she was able to make out anything the bug being said was astounding to say the least. “Christ dude, I’m not turning into a giant bug thing am I?” she sarcastically questioned as she rubbed her eyes.
Ms. Schmidt’s mandibles clicked briefly. “Some have survived experience. But no” she waved off as she peered back down at her clipboard.
Sandra’s eyes lingered on the professor’s exposed abdomen as Lotte’s secondary set of arms swirled against the surface of it, akin to an ordinary housefly’s routines of grooming itself. Sandra peered back up to the teacher’s compound eyes. “Do I at least get a pair of those?” she asked facetiously as she pointed to the tiny set of bug legs jutting out from the teacher’s torso.
“Didn’t know comedy was art form in Lyra” she replied after setting her clipboard down and getting her bearings straightened out. “Know why here?”
“Nope” she stated bluntly, though not confidently since she did not quite understand the phrasing that the teacher put forth.
“Fainted during fight with other student.”
Sandra paused for a moment as she put her thinking face on. She couldn’t quite recall the events that led up to her ‘fainting’, but the conclusion that the teacher had sounded logical. “Not something I normally do, but that sounds like me. Am I good to go then?”
The bug-ish being began to stroke what was left of its chin, trying to deduce the best way to phrase the next sentence it was about to utter. “No. Cause was physical exertion. Body under normal circumstances wouldn’t shut down from so little exertion” she explained simply.
“I mean, the most exercise I get is when the battery on my remote dies so… not really surprising” she excused just as easily.
Lotte was slightly getting irritated from the student’s constant snarky interruptions, so she supposed that she should just drop the news as it was. “Body thinks its pregnant.”
Sandra’s mouth momentarily opened to make another snarky remark, but words seemed to fail her for the moment. Her eyes navigated away from the thing she was talking to as she tried to piece together what ‘her body thinks it’s pregnant’ would mean. The teacher’s way of speaking was normally confusing, but adding that riddle onto it and the connotations of pregnancy boggled her mind to no end. With a countenance that suggested shock, Sandra looked back on the woman. “Thinks? Uh, could you tell it that I’m not? What the fuck does that mean?”
“Not simple. Body reacting similar to pregnancy, no embryo present. Working theory: prior medical reports state encounters with two fire elementals, both absorbed into body. First accident, second attracted by ‘heat expulsion’ due to power. Power absorbs heat, beings comprised completely of fire and heat, so when absorbed their essence was as well. Nurse reports that essence of other being present on body. First elemental too weak to escape on its own, called for help. Fire elementals collecting energy from body, activating hormones to produce more. Seemed to have degraded into one being in process.”
“…So, those two fire elementals were absorbed into my body, fucked each other, and now I’m having their baby?” she responded rather bluntly.
Lotte had to briefly stop and think on Sandra’s rather crude way of reshaping her words. She bobbed her head from side to side lightly. “Possible. Unsure if capable of breeding, but something is there.”
Sandra slowly lowered her head. Becoming pregnant with some sort of fire baby was something she really didn’t expect to happen when she first applied at Foresta, frankly becoming pregnant at all was something she generally thought wouldn’t happen period. She supposed it really wasn’t the same thing though, it was more along the lines of a parasite that was sapping her of her energy and making her feel like she was. In which case “okay, whatever it is, you can get it out of me, right?” she questioned as she subtly looked back up.
“Unsure. Creature not inside you, but around you. Presence detected around midsection, not inside. Older file states ring appeared in same location after series of ‘heat expulsions’. Possibly connected? Unclear, not enough data on power to tell. Would need tests to determine significance.”
It wasn’t exactly the kind of answer that Sandra wanted to hear. She had enough problems dealing with her abilities making her a human time bomb without having to worry about something else living inside her, or ‘around her’ as the teacher put it. She supposed that it was only a matter of time before ignoring her powers was going to bite her, and it seemed that now more than ever she needed to understand what it was doing to her body in order to solve this problem. “So, what do I do until we figure this out?” she asked as her comical tone seemed to dissipate from her voice. It seemed that a feeling of dread was beginning to dominate her mood.
Lotte’s head slightly jerked over to the clipboard once again and she picked it up in order to get Sandra’s answer. “Nurse recommends to increase calorie intake. If related to power, increasing heat intake also good idea. Fainting and nausea may increase if ignored. Creature will continue to syphon energy until removed.”
The more she thought on it, the more it made sense for her recent mood changes. More specifically it explained why she seemed to grow more of an appetite. Though as the teacher mentioned it being removed, another thought donned on her. “And what if it comes out on its own? You said that it was collecting energy from me in order to escape, how long until that happens?”
“Unsure” the buggy professor stated with a shrug. “Unique anatomy and power, hasn’t happened before, no references. Very bizarre circumstance. Has been with you long time, probably needs couple months depending on how much it is fed.”
Again, the lack of concrete answers were not making Sandra feel any easier on the situation. Considering that her repression of her powers was one of the main issues in play, she really had nowhere else to shift the blame outside of herself. She gave off a hefty sigh as she stroked her forehead to ease the tension within her own mind. Without saying anything though, she removed her glasses from her face and laid back down on her bed, hoping that, like last time, she would wake up to a more preferable scenario.
