Full Name: Sheridan Mace

*will finish schedule later
Power(s): Sheridan’s power is the elemental control of light and shadow. He has been able to use this gift since birth. His parents first discovered that their son was different when he began happily bending the sunlight and moonlight around his bedroom as an infant. He can manipulate any light--whether natural or artificial. He cannot, however, create it. It must be summoned. As magic is rare where he comes from, his parents discouraged his ability. So, Sheridan would practice in secret. He found that he was able to manipulate and bend light itself--to the point of creating a concentrated beam or sphere that could be used for self-defense. His power showed its dangerous side when he accidentally harmed his younger sister. She recovered, but Sheridan would never forgive himself.
The opposite elemental power that Sheridan possesses is shadow manipulation. Sheridan is able to move the shadows around him, manifest darkness, and even teleport through the shadows. He teleports by entering one shadow and exiting through another, using them rather like doors. He has embraced this power more fully, and is significantly more skilled at using it. This is reflective of his personality: shadow magic is an art of escape and defense, while light is primarily offense. Sheridan fears his light powers, and has not used them since the incident (see history).
Sheridan senses light and its absence around him through his heightened sense of touch and another, unnamed sixth sense. He feels the minute heat and cold of light and shadow, and is thus able to direct his power.
Appearance: Sheridan is of Penobscot (Native American) and Irish descent. He has longish black hair, long enough to pull back into a ponytail, and stormy gray eyes that often stare off into the distance. His skin is the tanned complexion of most Native Americans, and is unmarred save for a single jagged scar across his right eye and cheekbone. He stands at an impressive 6’5”, and is of a muscular, intimidating build. Between his shoulder blades is a black and white yin-yang tattoo, a mark of the darkness and light within him. He wears a silver claw earring in his left ear.
As for clothing, Sheridan could honestly care less. He doesn't bother himself with fashion, but can usually be seen wearing his deerskin jacket and a pair of jeans. He carries himself proudly, defiantly, almost daring others to make a comment.
He has been completely blind since birth, a possible side effect of his powers. Thus, he is never without his seeing-eye dog, Ash.
Personality: Sheridan is, and always has been, a loner. To those he does not like, which is most everyone, he is snappish and short-tempered. He keeps to himself, and can usually be found in the corner of a room. He is not emotionless, however, but is just very good at concealing his emotions. He hides his pain, and despises asking for help for anything. However, the one he is cruelest to is himself.
However, if someone sticks around him long enough to befriend him, Sheridan shows his loyal side. He is very protective of those he considers his friends, and will defend them no matter what. It takes a while to open his heart, but once unlocked, he loves with all his soul. Though of course, he’d never admit it, being as stubborn as he is. He has never fallen in love, but knows that he's nowhere near straight.
For all his gruff exterior, Sheridan does have a soft side (though it is seldom shown). He feels an instinctive need to protect those weaker or smaller than him, and has very little tolerance for bullies. He’s also an academic, having a particular passion for science and history. His intelligence lends him a biting wit, which he displays in his frequently-employed sarcasm.
Sheridan's hobby, if it can be considered one, is martial arts. He has trained for over a decade, managing to attain a degree of mastery. He earned his black belt at age seventeen. Ironically, despite his aggressive personality and skill in combat, he is a firm pacifist. He would only fight when there is absolutely no other option.
As for his other hobbies: he enjoys spending time with Ash, and doing activities associated with the backwoods: hiking, listening to the birds, and generally spending time surrounded by nature. This helps him forget his past for the time being, and relax. He is always most comfortable outside and in the forest.
Weaknesses: Sheridan does not view his blindness as a weakness, yet his stubbornness about it is most definitely one. His stubborn pride leads him to never ask for help. This can also lead to him pushing people away, which can be damaging in the long run.
His repression of his emotions is another weakness. This makes him unstable, both mentally and emotionally. He holds his feelings in until he explodes, something that does not bode well for both him and those around him. Due to his two rather opposite powers, he himself can be contradictory. One might call him bipolar, but not quite.
Powerwise, a handicap would be Sheridan’s reliance on the sun and moon. For example, his light powers are stronger when he has access to the sun, and weaker when he has to use the paler moonlight. As his teacher died before his training could be completed, Sheridan still has a long way to go when it comes to mastering or even controlling his powers. Also, he tends to favor his shadow power over his light one, which causes a great deal of inner pain. He fears his light power, and thus represses it, not wishing to hurt any innocents. The mental dark and light within him are constantly at war, threatening to tear his soul apart.
Strengths: Sheridan is very strong physically. In a desperate attempt to make up for his blindness, he has always exercised vigorously, pursuing martial arts in particular. He also has extremely heightened senses for a human, especially hearing and touch. These all make him an extremely capable fighter. (Though his lack of vision leads to some understandable clumsiness sometimes.)
He has an extraordinarily high intellect, and knows it. This enables him to excel in academics, at least those he has an interest in. However, his way of speaking--meaning, he enjoys cursing and using the word 'ain't'--lead many to perceive him as being unintelligent. When it comes to the paper and pen, he is the opposite. He shows an eloquent, satirical manner in the written word, bordering on arrogant.
History & Family: Sheridan Mace was born to Lorcan and Sokanon Mace on June 10th, 1996. His father, Lorcan, was of Irish descent, and his mother Sokanon was of the Penobscot tribe. Sheridan’s birthplace and home was a small, backwoods village in Maine. From a young age, Sheridan was an outsider. Ostracized by others due to his disability, and kept hidden for fear his powers would be discovered, his childhood was a lonely one. His biracial parentage didn't gain him any favors with the village children, either. Sheridan’s only friend was his younger sister, Amara. She was four years younger than him, and the only one who did not fear him. He enjoyed showing her his powers, but one day, he accidentally struck her, injuring her with his light. She recovered, but Sheridan would always feel the heavy burden of guilt when in her presence. He was only eight at the time.
Three years later, Amara urged Sheridan to show her his powers once more. He refused, fearing he would hurt her again. She pleaded with him, insisting that he could control his gift now, and he finally consented, wishing to make her happy. He summoned the familiar magic, but after years of dormancy, it quickly grew beyond his control. Flashbacks and nightmares bombarded the boy as fear overtook his mind. Light and shadow exploded outward, killing Amara instantly. Unnatural darkness came over the entire village at the unwilling Sheridan’s bidding. Powerful light engulfed his home, setting it ablaze. Sheridan could feel the searing heat on his face. He cried for help, but it was too late. He was later found, badly burned and barely alive, clutching the body of his sister. His parents did not survive.
The true cause of the house fire and village-wide plunge into temporary darkness was kept a secret from the people of the town. The event was ruled a freak accident, and it soon faded from public view. The now-orphaned boy was quietly moved away from his home village, being taken in by his mother’s sister, Nadie. A stern woman to everyone else, she seemed only to have a soft spot for the young Sheridan. It took years, but she coaxed and encouraged the boy to use his ability once more. A magic-user herself, Nadie taught the young boy, her method of teaching strict but effective. Despite his improving control over his gift, Sheridan would always hold a deep hatred for both himself and his gift, and would only use his powers of darkness. He blamed himself for the death of his family, and always would. As time passed, he and his aunt grew very close, and Sheridan dared to open his heart again. Nadie’s 15th birthday present to him was a black husky/wolf puppy he named Ash. The dog went through training and successfully became a seeing-eye dog. Now the two could truly be inseparable. For the first time in years, Sheridan was happy.
But sadly, it could not last. Nadie died just before Sheridan’s 18th birthday. The circumstances of her death were unexplained, but the young man had a terrible suspicion that she had been murdered. Searching for any clues that might lead to her killer, Sheridan dug through her past, uncovering secrets better left to the darkness.
Hearing of Foresta Academy’s reputation for teaching the supernaturally-gifted, Sheridan hastened to enroll, hoping to strengthen his powers--well, his shadow one, at least. But still he feared losing control again.
In Character sample: Sheridan closed his sightless eyes, feeling the warm breeze caress his face. Ash tugged at the harness, urging his master onward. Feeling a smile tug at his lips, Sheridan acquiesced, following his best friend’s meandering path. Ash soon stopped, accompanying his action with a soft grumble. At hearing the rush of water over stone, Sheridan knew they had indeed arrived. It was his favorite place, a quiet riverbank to relax and ponder. He sat down on a nearby rock, and extended a hand until he felt the soft fur of the wolfdog. His left hand joined his right as he stroked Ash’s head. “You’re my best friend, you know that, bud?”
Ash’s only response was to lick his master’s face with a happy whine.
Sheridan smiled. “Of course you do.”
