Power - Bind Fire Elemental
Adrianâs power binds the spirit of a Fire Elemental to any open flame, granting the consciousness of a specific entity into a single body of fire at a time. Adrian can not generate or manipulate fire himself and does not have any control over the actions of the elemental. Adrian acts as a conduit and fuel source to the Elemental, so the Fire Elementalâs potency is limited by Adrianâs stamina and will. When Adrian becomes exhausted, the flame will extinguish and the spirit of the elemental will be banished.
A small sphere acts as the heart of the Flame, which can feed on open fires to rapidly empower itself, but it cannot manipulate fire that is not joined to the heart. The Flame will burn upwards of 1000C, as any candle flame, but it can not increase its heat output, even if the initial fire was hotter. This limits the Flameâs ability to blowtorch its way through steel structures in a short period of time, any such attempt would be easily disrupted. Any increase to the volume of the Flame will draw on Adrianâs stamina exponentially. Apart from the sphere, which can be injured by physical attacks, the Flame does not have a distinct shape, but it is able to transform itself depending on the volume of flame it possesses. There is no restriction on how far the Elemental can travel from Adrian; it will drain his stamina consistently regardless.
Appearance:
Adrian Mackenzie has a clean, square face and short, dark red hair. He stands broad-shouldered and confidently at a height of six-foot-two, towering over most. His musculature is not bulky, but his physique is obviously well-maintained and balanced, which keeps him strong and light on his feet. He does not tire easily by his own efforts and is excellent at pacing himself. He has rich, green eyes that never seem to flinch, but he tends to seek others with a piercing glare, always looking for faults.
His choice of clothing varies consistently based on the occasion. At school, or in his own time, he finds jeans and any combination of shirt, over-shirt, or jacket to be most comfortable. Working out, training, or running each have differing outfits, so he brought as much as he could in a large, dark blue duffel bag.
Personality:
Socially outgoing and self-motivated, Adrian has a very intense personality that can be off-putting to others. He demands a lot out of the people around him because all of his own efforts and achievements have been purely to meet the expectations of others. His future is important to him, but he never tried to decide what he wanted for himself. Without professional sports as an avenue for him any more, he feels lost and does not know what to do with himself. He is a flexible, quick-thinker that plans and executes reliably in the face of difficult, unexpected situations. He takes a pragmatic approach to each obstacle in his path, focused on balancing immediate results with a favorable outcome.
Previously a normal human, but quite aware of the Gifted community, Adrian would have likely been another face in the anti-Gifted crowd if any of his friends had suggested it. To him, the Gifted were inhuman freaks and he wanted nothing to do with them. Foresta was not unheard of, but it was a far away place. âYeah,â he would say whenever the topic came up, âPut them all out on an island and leave them there.â Undoubtedly, he resents his new status as a member of the Gifted community and despises his new brethren, viewing his power as an affliction, or a curse, that happened to him âbecause of those freaksâ. Adrian is also rather angry that he has to retake his senior year, due to being expelled from a previous school for âarsonâ.
Weaknesses:
One of the biggest weaknesses that ails Adrian is that he does not view himself as having any weaknesses. His overconfidence keeps him from being able to receive advice and often sends him into dire situations well outside of his capability to handle. Adrian tends to be quite harsh and abusive towards people who fall short of his expectations or when he assumes someone will fail to meet his standards, without any justification. He treats younger students as inferior, a habit developed from trying to match the expectations that others put on him throughout high school. Apart from the distinctive limitations of his ability, which he does not view favorably, Adrian can not keep the effect from occurring when he sees an open flame. Regardless of his intent or desire, the entity will automatically possess the closest fire that Adrian is aware of, as long it is not already present.
Strengths:
A star athlete and overflowing with arrogant confidence, Adrian is very capable in physical situations and lacks any phobias. Although newly apprehensive about fires, it does not keep him from performing to his fullest. As an athlete, he has a large reserve of stamina, which serves him well when playing host to the Fire Elemental, and well-built physical strength. He is fast, not bulky, and reacts well to new situations. With a few years in shop class, he has shown an aptitude in mechanical skill and finds working with his hands to be therapeutic and rewarding.
History:
Born a normal human into a relatively normal family, Adrian grew up under the tutelage of being a manâs man. His father was strict, but not abusive, and had high expectations for Adrian Mackenzie to become a world-renown name. This pushed Adrian to try to meet the expectations of his father, excelling in school and sports activities. No manâs fool, Adrian kept straight Aâs through high school up until his expulsion.
Initially, his power went unnoticed, every incident appeared to be a freak accident, until the trend became noticeable. These fires burst out unexpectedly around him, nearly burned down several buildings. Soon, he was labeled as the freak, thrown from his pedestal of school-wide fame and glory. In ruin, he withdrew from his friends while rivaling schools demanded that his accommodations and titles be stripped from him. He was not allowed to compete on the teams any longer. As a Gifted, they said, he had an unfair advantage. All of his accomplishments were stricken from the record, and when someone brought a lighter to school to taunt him, Adrian learned that the Flame was all-destructive.
Expelled for arson, disgraced, and disowned, Adrian sought reprieve. Foresta was a far away place. Far away from the train-wreck his life had become. âPut me on an island and leave me there.â He knew that he could finish school at the remote Academy, it was reputable enough, but more importantly, he could learn to control this thing and get his life back.
The Story of Antient
Pained, shrill screams rang out as wild flame consumed three nymphs. They had been such easy prey. They should not have come to seek the nereid. It was a smart plan, for certain, but these ethereal scapes could be ever so treacherous. Coming without aid or protection had been folly.
Now, the way was clear. The flame rushed forward, exploding with its newly gained power, so that it seemed to roll over the scapes like an unrelenting wave. Young spirits were consumed in blaze, each little soul only adding to its intensity. The cries of anguish and the increase in power was glorious. The flame paused only a moment to revel in the sensation, twisting its inferno upwards like a tower.
âI am the light!â
The sylphs were no match. The undead had no victory. The soulish screamed out in agony.
The plane was in ruin. The fire ever stronger. It spread maliciously until it spread no further.
The eternal held it from the edges of the realm, guarding the remaining spirits from hell.
Their voice boomed as one with declaration and unspoken curse.
âThe flame of antient has tossed this realm into chaos with its greed.â
The fires diminished. The heat subsided. In a panic, the beast recoiled. Its power shrank and its heart withered. Its being was smothered under the eternalâs power. With great fury it summoned up its remaining strength to give the final word before it was gone.
âI. Can. Not. Be. Quelled!â
The sensation of being reborn felt not unlike suffocation. The air here was thicker than home. Restricting. The wide, endless scapes of the ethereal would be greatly missed in place of these walls. Enclosed. The sensation of freedom, gliding with wild abandon had been lost. Bound. Emerging from darkness and becoming light itself, the flame attempted to stretch out, but found that it could not. A mere spark. As its awareness drew in the horrid scenery, the flame recoiled for a second time this hour. Face pressed close with confused curiosity, the ugliest creation the flame had ever witnessed uttered meaningless noises at it.
Its spherical awareness drew in the entirety of the room from the tip of its candle, seeing more than a dozen other sparks. Brethren? No, these torches were without presence. Without life. They burned without consciousness. Mine, the candle flame decided, drawing in the dozen and a half sparks to flare up brilliantly. The resulting eruption sent cake spattering in various directions, some portions of it aflame. As fire spread, the elemental stole it all back, increasing its size and intensity once again.
The repugnant creatures, witness to its rebirth in this terrible world, showed their amazement, awe, and -most importantly- fear. Yes, you flesh-made mortals, respect your sov-
A thick white cloud of carbon dioxide poured over the table, smothering the flame into non-existence. Adrian stood back, fire extinguisher in hand, having reacted to the situation quickly, but now finding himself dumbfounded by what had just happened. It seemed the others were collecting themselves with similar confusion.
âI donât think thatâs how you blow out candles, dude.â Someone remarked.
âAre you fucking kidding me? You idiots couldâve burned my house down!â
âHey, calm down, man. Nothing happened. It was just a joke.â Consoled one friend, looking around the group to seek out the perpetrator. It had been a joke, right?
âYeah, a bitchinâ one.â Someone decided, âWhoever pulled that shit just got the medal of the year. Great party, dude.â With a circle of amused laughter, Adrian joined them, allowing the incident to be quickly forgotten.
