It was close to four in the morning when Serenity found herself stumbling up stairs, having missed her own apartment as she climbed until she got to the third floor. The night was silent except for her labored breathing and the occasional giggle at a funny thought. After having saved a student in the forest, Serenity had stopped by the tavern for a drink - or five. Her mind was filled with memories from her twenties, a tumultuous time from when she let something truly mythological into her heart. Just this night too, for a brief second - she did the same thing and hated herself for it.
In truth, it hadn't been that big of an ordeal and she had handled herself just as she always did. Aloof sarcasm and blunt words and walking away from the situation with no hard feelings, that was until she had arrived in Port Albion.
Tapping her cane against every metal railing she passed, it seemed as though the woman was looking for a fight - or something else completely. Running her fingers along the apartment doors she passed as well, Serenity finally stopped when she recognized the numbers she was looking for. Taking a deep breath, Serenity closed her fist tight and started to bang on Cade's door. "Stop fucking around and come on out Lemaire!" She hollered at the door then, her words coming out angry and slightly slurred. As she flexed her arm, the wound she had earlier that evening opened up - blood starting to stain the sleeve of the large green cotton coat she was wrapped in.

With Cade’s last evening with a female escort going somewhat awry, he attempted to place his interests elsewhere. There were plenty of books out and about that detailed many other ways for a man to spend a night on his own and have it equally being stress relieving as sexual intercourse. Those novels were scams though, so he merely cloned a page and brought it back home with him to humour his evening. He really had nothing better to do with his nights ever since he had to give up on his ploys to win Serenity’s heart. Good riddance to those nights, a woman’s heart should’ve never been his goal in the first place, it has much less pleasurable orifices.
Anyways, his night was spent exclusively on his precious tower of cards, and it was becoming a very impressive pyramid with time. He had very steady fingers and carefully placed the peak to his monument. As it was complete, he slowly backed away, a clear sense of pride in himself as he observed his masterpiece from afar. It was nothing that was world record material, but it was still an accomplishment he could admire. Unfortunately, there was a knock at his door, a strong one at that. So strong that it made his entire room tremble in its power, the tower stayed intact, but the rickety coffee table it was standing upon finally decided it was time to take an early retirement and fell to pieces, the playing cards fluttering through the air as he wandered toward the door.
“This is why I can’t have nice things” he very quietly stated as he drew closer to the port. As he did though, he heard the growling gremlin that awaited him on the other side, a quick flashback to the last time she had done this being fresh in his mind. Regardless of the result of tonight, he should not tell Serenity that they had sex the next morning, his arm still didn’t feel like it was in the right place. Regardless of that, he sighed, kind of expecting this to be some sort of trap. Even if it was the real Serenity this time around, he didn’t know if he was ready to deal with her issues. Cade was perfectly fine with being a free agent. Sure, the thought of her hurt him slightly, but it didn’t hurt as much as what she would usually do to him anyways.
He plotted for a moment to pretend he wasn’t home, but ultimately decided that it was the coward’s way out, he’d much rather face this one head on, mostly because he’s an idiot. With a flick of his wrist, the door flew open, its strength being rather unimpressive, in fact she probably could’ve knocked his door down without much force if she really wanted to. Cade was quick to recognise that she was drunk, in addition to bleeding, though when it came to Serenity one usually meant the other, so it wasn’t anything really new. So long as she didn’t bleed out on his carpet. “Ah drunk again I see” he announced with open arms. “Come in come in, I’m sure you have something insightful to lecture me on” he continued as he waved his arm and scooted out of the way as a gesture to allow her entrance.
“You know, it’s so lovely to have you in and out of my life like this. I was almost beginning to think you cared enough about me to leave me on the side of the road like you harvested my organs. But please, feel free to come back in here like you give a single damn about me” he presented with a cheery tone and pleasant features on his face despite it being completely lost on the woman opposite to him.

Serenity spared no time waiting at his door as Cade opened up his apartment to her, some of his words were lost to her as she transitioned from the silence of the outside to the small buzz of inside. On occasions if Serenity paid enough attention it was very easy for her to focus on the buzz that old lights emitted, something that is easily ignored by your common every day person. "What do you mean again? We haven't seen each other in months." Serenity replied to him rudely then, instead of walking by him she ran straight into the man - or more so fell into him.
As he continued to speak though, Serenity started to rub her hands up his arms in a particularly aggressive manner. "You are the noisiest man I've ever met, Lemaire. You talk even more than Theron used too." There it was, Serenity stopped for a moment - her hands lingering momentarily on Cade's chest. A mixture of emotions started to parade around Serenity's face then, longing and sadness being the most primary. Soon though all those emotions were wiped away as Serenity moved her head up toward Cade and proceeded to raise her arm up, pulling down her sleeve to show the other teacher her injury. The cut was deep and small near the crook of her elbow, it was bleeding slowly as well since she had been so forcefully knocking on his door previously. "I gave a vampire student my blood today, how stupid is that? He could have fucking killed me, all because I thought it was some good idea to be nice to someone for once." Serenity's words came out mangled then, almost as if she were eating rotten chicken - the woman had a disgusted expression on her face.
With her other hand though, Serenity moved it up toward Cade's face - stopping briefly underneath his jawline as if looking for some permission as opposed to how she was handling him only a few seconds earlier. "Don't act like you haven't missed me," Serenity said to the man then - her voice softening and almost seeming to sober up for just a few minutes.

The drunken maiden continued to blunder her way around, choosing (well, maybe more so forced in her condition) to bash herself against Cade rather than easing her way through his easy path provided. She updated him on the date in which they went their separate ways, thought to Cade it definitely felt sooner than that. In fact, someone who looked and addressed herself as Serenity went through this exact same scene with him not too long ago. Despite how close this person acted like Serenity, Cade still readied his fist so that he could test if this was just another of that sand golem’s games. He knew a well-placed punch would be enough to determine whether the woman was made of sand or flesh.
As he prepared a quick piston punch, the woman began to blather on about some other guy. A man named Theron. He couldn’t recall ever hearing of a person with that name, so he hardly felt it to be a reference to something he’d understand. “Well Hikaro, I gotta say for someone so brutish as you, you talk more than the hulk does” he retorted in a mocking manner to her sentence. If she didn’t know of the Avenger that would be bonus points.
Even as the woman lingered around his body, he nearly launched his fist, but before he could his co-worker displayed the gash she had acquired, being more than enough proof to sway him on the side of her being the real Serenity considering the difficulty that Tem would have to replicate that same display. It wasn’t a pleasant sight, but with her pressed up against his body the way it was it wasn’t like he had an option. Though hearing the story behind her words left a rather sour taste in his mouth. “Aw, look at you, risking life and limb for a student. By the sounds of it, you didn’t even know him. That must’ve been tough, I mean actually having faith in someone, oof, you couldn’t even do that with people you know” he slyly replied, for some reason trying to act clever when speaking with someone who is clearly beyond wasted.
The touch of Serenity filled him with unease, as though months of tension had finally been released. There had always been something desirable about the woman to Cade, but he refused to given in so easily as though he was her lapdog, waiting for her advancements to further whatever relationship they had. “Perhaps” he started as he nudged away her lustful hand. “That being said though, I can miss the rain, but still enjoy the sun and the snow without much issue. After all, the sun and the snow let me play around as I so please” he explained with a mighty smirk plastered across his countenance. His metaphors might be lost on the drunkard, but he was more so saying it for himself, reveling in his ways to make his sexual splendors sound poetic.

Ignoring, or more like not noticing the certain flare he gave to her last name - Serenity shook her head at the Avenger reference. She didn't have the access to movies and tv shows like other people did, naturally - so popular media references typically were filtered through her students and what she heard.
At his condescending tone though, Serenity turned her head away him. A weaker woman would have been hurt or upset, Serenity was simply mad (and drunk). As she turned, the woman's hair fell at such an angle that the scar that was typically not that obvious on Serenity's neck was in plan view for Cade. The thin line stretched up across her jawline and it was obvious that Serenity had this skin flaw for quite a few years. "I don't have to defend myself against you," Serenity said then - her eyebrows narrowing in a stubborn manner.
It was when Cade pushed Serenity's hand away though, that the woman backed off a slight bit - shaking her head at his attempt to make his sex life sound good. "Don't compare me to rain, jackass." Her tone suggested jealously, but her body language showed she was obviously trying to gain distance once more. Moving away from him, Serenity made her way into the man's living room - finding the closest thing she could sit on. After a few seconds, that thing ended up being a couch. As she sat, Serenity peeled off her coat - revealing form fitting clothes that covered from top to bottom, but favored the woman's curves nonetheless. "It's your business if you wanna put your dick in every thing that moves, but just don't tell me about for fuck's sake."
She missed him. How could she admit it? Would it even make sense to admit it now? His stupid bantering and the way he made her feel. She had been the one to turn him away, it only made sense that he was with other people now. Serenity chewed on her lower lip as she got comfortable on his couch, she was frustrated but she did have one thing going for her. He did let her into his home, she hadn't completely missed her chance... at least not yet.

The man’s sudden jaggedness toward Serenity had clearly struck a chord with her, making her quit her close quarters gestures and attempts at drunken seduction. A younger Cade would’ve fallen prey to it quite easily. It was for not though, as the teacher quickly adjusted his bright vest and opted to shut the door once his co-worker had found a place to reside within his abode. The fact that the woman was still around after that swift spat that just passed displayed her attractiveness to Cade. She was even more stubborn than he was.
The math teacher snickered at her comment as his feet found their way across the card covered flooring. “No, I don’t suppose you do. Don’t let me interfere with your own vivid image of what and who you are” he shot back jovially as he paused at the collapsed coffee table not too far from where Serenity chose to reside herself. He bent over and picked up the card that started it all, the six of hearts. He fiddled around with the flimsy paper in behind his fingers, though ultimately wandered about his cabin, not choosing to stay in one place specifically. His eyes caught onto his house guest’s attire, lingering for far longer than he would like to admit. Something about his recent escapades only made him crave the womanly figure more, but he didn’t let himself be consumed by the addiction of allure. He was already an avid addict of a myriad of other substances.
“There is nothing wrong with rain. I like the rain just fine. In fact, I might prefer it over the sun. If you want to see that as a metaphor, you can go right ahead, I’m just talking about weather” he rambled in a rather easygoing tone as he approached the backend of the couch, slightly hovering over Serenity’s head. “But we can talk about my dick and the weather all we want, I doubt it’s the reason you’re here. By the way, I can give you a list of my sexual partners in the last couple of months so you can go hound them if you’d like, but that’s neither here nor there” he spoke rather dastardly before pulling his head back in order to avoid any sort of impromptu suplex that she might be inclined to perform.
Cade began to roll the card up in a manner that he was quite familiar and had practiced quite a bit and proceeded to stick it in his mouth like a cigarette. “No, there’s something about this vampire kid that really digs at you, you know other than the actual dig in you. It’s not physical, it’s emotional pain, isn’t it? Well then, it’s adorable that you still come to me for advice” he stated as he patted Serenity on the head like she was a lost infant.

"If I had any image of myself, I'm sure I would have been able to see it by now." Serenity's words sounded almost self-deprecating - an odd thing for a woman that was best friends with confidence. As she laid out on Cade's couch, the woman held her arm out in a poor attempt to not get any blood on the math teachers furniture. With the combination of drinking and bleeding, Serenity was in a poorer state than usual - an uncommon practically nonexistent sight for most. As Cade talked though, the woman stayed silent for once - letting out a harsh huff of air as Cade offered up a list of all the people he's had sex with.
As he got to the point and what seemed to be the root of her problems, Serenity uninjured arm and hand shot up quickly as he patted her head. Grabbing a hold of the man's fingers, Serenity squeezed tight "You can be bitchy and moody all you want, but don't you dare touch me in such a condescending way again." The alcohol in her system fueled her anger, but the sound of Cade's voice seemed to do the complete opposite. Despite the fact that her power allowed her to copy the range of his vocal chords, to her it just wasn't quite the same as opposed to hearing it from the source.
Letting go of his fingers, Serenity tensed her body for a moment to prepare if he was going to try some sort of rebuttal. "You are the only person in my life right now that refers to anything I do adorable," Serenity said to the man then - somewhat putting the question off. It was hard for get to gauge if he was actually willing to listen or if he was just going to keep on reminding her about how she kept on denying him only a few months earlier. "Are you going to continue to talk down at me? Or are we actually going to speak to each other like normal people?" Serenity questioned the man then - sighing as she felt some of her blood run into the crook of her elbow and start to move down and away from her arm.

The way in which Serenity spoke (when Cade wasn’t poking and prodding her in a pestering way) made it seem as though she had nowhere else to go. It was quite bothersome actually. When he last envisioned this meet up he expected there to be at least a bit more spite being tossed around than there actually was. He was doing all he could to push her buttons, but she kept derailing his insults and batting with the same ease she had with his punches. It was almost upsetting. His gut reaction was to aid her in whatever fight it was she was going through, as was his promise to her when their relationship wasn’t so blurred. He was stubborn enough to want to continue the fight though, it was so rare for him to have the chance to confront those that wronged him in his life and it was hard to let this one slip by.
As he contemplated his actions, the woman sprung for his hand like a scorpion did its prey. Cade could’ve seen that coming from a mile away, in fact he was quite aware that it would be the route she would take when he initially performed the gesture. He was glad to see some sort of aggressive reaction from Serenity and he was ready to spit some more vileness her way, but he held back his tongue. He had made that promise way back when and while the terms of it were not something he held value for anymore, he said he would be there for her. Cade allowed the finger torture to take its course, hiding the pain from it and refusing to say anything about it should he blather something he may regret in the future.
Once his fingers were freed, he swiftly whisked them back to his body, allowing his other hand to pop them back in their correct joints. He very silently rolled his arm and stepped over the back of his couch and seated himself properly. “Cuteness is subjective, so I suppose you’re lucky you found someone on this island that’s just as twisted as you are” he rebutted as his eyes were still glued to his barely functional fingers.
There was still so much he wanted to say, but Serenity clearly hadn’t come to his apartment for his ridicule, something big must’ve happened and he was genuinely curious about what it was. Even if it meant he had to play nice for a short while. It didn’t mean he was ready to kiss and make up though. “Yes, let’s do that. Ex-assassin, please tell the drug dealer turned math teacher your woes” he stated in jest, mocking her thought of anything they could speak about being considered ‘normal.’

Serenity laughed lightly and with surprising ease as Cade sat next to her, he wasn't sure if he had actually complimented her or not - but at this rate she was willing to take anything as a good word to her character and appearance. As she sat on his couch though, Serenity brought her fist up toward her shoulder and motioned with her head toward the wound on her arm. "Before I say anything though, you would happen to have a paper towel or something? The last thing I'd want to do is piss you off with blood on your furniture." Serenity joked with the man, an unusual turn of behavior for the woman that added quite a peculiar bit of charm to her.
She wasn't exactly sure as to why she had decided to come over to Cade's apartment, now that the alcohol was fading just a bit and she was getting tiny bits of her common sense back - Serenity was remembering that she was the one that told him off. It was then that the woman realized it'd be a long shot now if she had any chance of bringing the man back to her side, or more like in her arms. It was an odd romantic notion for a woman that was so tough and distance, but as the saying goes - you never know what you have until it's gone.

Cade tilted his head as his eyes fell upon the gushing wound once more. That would be problematic wouldn’t it? Regardless of his furniture, the amount of blood she was losing in conjunction with her alcohol intake was not doing Serenity any favours physically or mentally. Cade knew that from firsthand experience. Just as quickly as he sat down, he got back up to venture over to his kitchen in search of something to clog her wound. “As much as I would love to reprimand you for the littlest of things, that couch is probably older than you. You would be doing me a favour by forcing me to get a new one” he explained rather plainly as he searched the cupboards in his closet sized kitchen. “All I would need to do is clone me a fresh batch of bills” he silently spoke as an aside whilst gripping against a fluffy spool of toilet paper (yes, he keeps his toilet paper in his kitchen).
His side quest didn’t take him too much time, and he tossed the roll over to his guest as he leisurely made his way back to his spot, not particularly being mindful of her as he sat back down in his previous spot. His emotions toward Serenity were complicated to say the least. Everything he had said before about them still rung true in his mind, if only with a slight bit of sour pessimism backing it up. He was so lost back then, he felt that it was a point in his life that he could so easily be abused due to his overly romantic view. If he learned anything, it was that he wasn’t meant for that life. He was meant to take over his pseudo-father’s empire and he threw that away, biggest mistake of his life. It wasn’t merely hunger for power, it was how he was raised, and it was what he was destined to do. What was he doing wasting his pursuits on a woman that quite literally beaten and broke him?
He coughed. “Right then, let’s have it.”

Serenity let her lids close once more as Cade stood up to take care of her request. Why was he even letting her sit here in the first place? What could he possibly stand to gain from her being here? Serenity's thoughts faded in and out all the way until a roll of toilet paper was tossed at her. The object in question bounced off her shoulder, a surprising thing since normally Serenity had the intuition, skill and speed to catch most things that were thrown at her physically and mentally. Something was wrong indeed.
Moving her hand across Cade's couch in a searching manner, the woman's fingers collided with the toilet paper in question. Frowning, Serenity pulled off a few sheets and laid it against her wound in question - wiping up the blood that had dripped down her arm as well. Silence laid over the two then as Cade had prompted her to start speaking, Serenity's lids opened once more and she turned toward him - her unseeing eyes seeming almost eerie in a sense. Everything that she had thought she had dealt with and forgotten came to a forefront in her mind this night.
"I lost it." Serenity said quietly to the man then, her voice seeming weak and so unlike her usual self. It had been so far in the past and with another person as well and despite the fact that person was gone, the mental scar of it still remained. "I didn't let you in because I just... couldn't let it happen again, and then just lose it with someone else." Serenity's lips dried for a moment and the woman lightly licked them, her lower lip folding in toward her teeth.
For someone so strong and confident in her everyday life, this memory was enough to sober up any woman. Serenity opened her mouth then to say more, but then shut it - silence filling the room once more.

Cade absently watched the woman clean herself up, thanking whatever god that assisted in the creation of toilet paper that he bought the strongest brand known to man. Otherwise, the paper cloth would’ve been torn to shreds the moment that Serenity would have attempted a simple wipe. Regardless of that though, he pulled the fake cigarette out of his mouth momentarily, as though he was blowing out the excess smoke in his mouth.
The silence was peculiar, as was the weakness on Serenity’s features. His own countenance quirked at the eerie lack of any sort of exchange, expecting something to burst out of her mouth at some point. Something did come along, but it was very silent words. Was that fear and despair radiating from her mouth? Cade was so unaccustomed to these weaker emotions coming from Serenity that he couldn’t quite tell if that was what was happening. He was certain that she had them, but he never expected to hear them in such a way, on top of that, why would she come to him for it, especially after his attempts at breaking her spirit earlier. Then again, it could be as he predicted, she had nowhere else to go. As he stated many times in the past, they were both lone wolves, he supposed that made them a pack.
The ominous curiosity was rooted in the woman’s words. What was ‘it’ and what did it have to do with the math teacher? Was she talking about a bad break up in the past, was that what prevented her from sealing the deal with Cade? No, she would be acting rather melodramatic if that was the case. Serenity wouldn’t be the kind of person to get hung up on that. Then again, she wasn’t the type to weep and moan on couches either, that was Cade’s job. It was something much bigger than that, it had to be.
“Lost… it?” he spoke in a confused manner as he tilted his head. He tried to piece it together on his own before Serenity could correct him. ‘It’ in this case definitely not being a physical possession with the way she spoke about it, but instead it was some kind of incident that she couldn’t let happen again. Which somehow tied to her giving blood to a vampire student. Was there some sort of transplant that went wrong with her last boyfriend? No, that didn’t seem right either. It had to be something that was Serenity’s to lose, or something that she felt was her fault. Did she drive off her last boyfriend and somehow that had something to do with a vampire? He was really grasping at straws at this point, he was a math teacher not a therapist. He saw it as vampire + something that was Serenity’s fault = answer and obviously that wasn’t leading him on the right path.
“Avoiding the subject by replacing the word with ‘it’ is not exactly the most recommended or healthy coping mechanism. If you’re trying to tell me something you’ll have to be a bit more descriptive in order for me to understand what you’re trying to get across” he continued in a manner that would be similar to a therapist’s, not exactly hiding any undertones and being more so civil with his approach than before. His stance on the woman might still be in a very grey area, but if it wasn’t for her he might’ve overdosed or had a variety of other nasty things happen to him, so he owed her that much.

Cade questioned her, only a natural reaction considering how vague she had been. As she sat on the math teacher's couch though, Serenity's mind traced back to memories of when she first arrived at this island. She was younger, just as scarred and yet somehow more open than she even felt now. With closed lips, Serenity's tongue moved over her teeth - as if attempting to hydrate her for what she was going to say next. After Cade suggested she be more specific, silence fell between the two of them for a good five and Serenity's pale eyes remained opened - seeming to look off into the distance and actually nothing at all in the same time.
"I had a miscarriage in my twenties." There it was, her natural blunt and honest character shined through for just long enough for Serenity to say what she wanted to say. As soon the words came out, suddenly it seemed more like a reality than it actually had been at the time. She hadn't talked to anyone about it, not even Theron. After all, he had been gone before then. The reality of it all seemed much more jarring compared to everything else she experienced in her life... even most of all, going blind.
As for why she was telling Cade this? At this point, the older woman had no idea. Somewhere in between the mix of need, alcohol and loneliness the power training teacher had decided to search Cade out - as if pleading for him to give her some solace to her tortured memories. She was exactly sure if he'd actually provide given their past, but there had been something that brought her here in the first place - if she was wrong though... Serenity couldn't ever come here again, much less try and talk to him.

The moment of silence was soon sliced by Serenity blunt yet sharp words. Even for someone who had lived in a gutter for a good majority of his life, the mere mention of miscarriage still felt dirty and rather eerie, even worse when it came from a woman who had experienced it. He had to question though, what did that have to do with him? Why would the thought of going through child birth be something that Serenity would consider as a milestone in a possible future relationship with Cade? It sure wasn’t something he had considered when he first pursued Serenity and frankly he’d never put thought into it until now. The more he thought about it though, the more it made sense. Serenity was a woman in her late thirties, her window of time for raising a family was getting shorter and shorter, but Cade on the other hand was in his early twenties, something like that would not be first on his list. Not to mention that he already had kids to deal with at school. It was in that moment that he could really feel the divide in their age more than ever before.
What made it worse for Cade was that he could, in a strange way, relate to Serenity in that moment. While he had never experienced a failed child birth first hand, the situation his real parents were put in after his kidnapping was similar to that. The only difference was that his parents didn’t know whether Cade was alive or not. Frankly, he couldn’t quite decide which was worse in that situation, losing the baby and knowing its dead or not knowing. He’d rather not have to make that decision.
The man didn’t say a word. What could he say even if he wanted to? There were no amount of wisecracks he could use to diffuse that bomb. No amount of smooth wordsmithing on his end could create a sentence that could stitch that wound up. Despite any quarrel that they were previously engaged in, Cade merely shifted himself across the couch in order to be in a closer proximity to Serenity. His eyes peeked at the patch up job she performed on her arm and very silently and subtly wrapped a few more strands of the soft paper around the wound and made sure the bandage was tight.
With no words, Cade slid his arm across Serenity’s shoulder line and very lightly laid his head upon hers. His expression was rather plain, but there was a strange sense of warmth that radiated off of it, sort of stoic in its own way. Not that it really mattered considering that the woman couldn’t see his facial expressions, he did it anyway in the miraculous and impossible case that her blindness might be cured in that moment.

The silence settled between the two, the small and gentle actions he performed caused Serenity's body to relax against his as he laid his head upon hers. For once, she was just a bit surprised as Cade grew silent and for a split second Serenity wondered what could the man possibly say even if he wanted to speak.
Quite a few minutes passed by and Serenity finally decided to break the silence. "Can we just stay like this?" she asked the man then, growing quite comfortable with his arm around her. The shared warmth between them reminded her that even though they both had powers, they were human too. For once, the woman felt like a normal human being. It was a strange sensation to consider, but Serenity moved slightly so as to lean her head more against Cade's shoulder - valuing the moment for what it truly was.
Peace.
