"Tell her to wait just a little- I'm a healer, not a doctor," the Cuban said with a lopsided grin. Jaime closed the passenger door carefully and sprinted around the car, hopping into the driver's seat. He made some deference to the law and hurriedly buckled his seatbelt. A moment later, they were pulling away.
Jaime focused on his driving, going as fast as he could go without being pulled over. This task was all-consuming because his first instinct was to speed and cut corners.
There was something going on in one of the streets he tried to turn down. With a low muttered curse, he executed a beautiful u-turn and took them down a slightly longer way.
Still, it didn't take them long to reach the hospital. He pulled up and frowned at the sheer number of people at the hospital. He noted a couple of police cars too, as well as a throng of newscasters. What was going on here?
Jaime turned off the truck and jumped out. The rush was back to being the most important thing to him. He picked up her hospital bag and waited for Amy to get out of the truck so he could lock it. "How are you doing," he asked with concern evident in his features.

Amy wasn't sure if she was going to survive this car ride. There were so many people on the roads; Jaime was, aggrivatingly enough, going the speed limit; roads were blocked; and then there was a huge mass of people at the hospital. It wouldn't have scared her so much if the police hadn't been there. Had something happened?
She hadn't felt her contractions in a while, but she wasn't sure if that was because she hadn't had any, or if her mind was simply in another place. Amy hadn't realized Jaime was talking to her. She glanced at him, and then back to the police cars. "Jaime, what's going on?" She couldn't keep the fear out of her voice. "Are we safe here?"
A wave of pain hit her. She grabbed the grab handle on the truck, clenching her teeth together to keep from yelling out. Right now, it didn't matter how safe this place was. There was a baby coming, and this was the only hospital on their part of the island.
With a quick glance at Jaime, she shook her head and slowly shimmied her way out of the truck. "Guess we'll have to find out when we get in, huh." She gripped Jaime's arm, trying not to put too much weight on him. No part of her wanted to stay outside any longer; all she wanted to do was hurry into the hospital and deliver this baby.

Jaime had no idea what was happening at the entrance of the hospital, but a look of utter determination crossed his face. This was quickly replaced by abject terror at Amy's pain. She'd tried to hide it, but he was the type of person who wasn't going to let that sort of thing slip by. She had shimmied out of the truck before he could react appropriately to this, though.
Setting his jaw, he locked the truck and began to escort Amy towards the hospital, taking as much of her weight as possible without throwing her off-balance. Luckily, the reporters were focused on the activity of the police officers and the police officers were trying to keep the hospital's entrance from being overrun with nosy parkers.
As they passed the reporters, he heard conversations about a woman being found downtown. Most of the voices agreed; she was in critical condition, and not responding to anything. A number of them suspected Gifteds were behind it. That made his blood run cold.
They were lucky that they looked like normal people. It felt like the anger that had encircled the globe was finally reaching Port Albion. What was going on? He steeled his resolve and navigated around the crowd, heading towards the door. The police didn't question their right to be there- they only had to take one look at Amy to understand.
All the while, Jaime murmured words of comfort to Amy and tried to keep her as calm as possible.
