Ah, fresh air! The luxurious aroma of roses in the Spring wafted through the afternoon as the glorious, golden sun shone brightly on the rose garden. In the distance, the sound of a harp played a sweet, wistful melody. Did I mention the air was fresh? I did? Well, not anymore!
Tobacco time!

Dev collapsed onto the park bench, exhausted, starving and brain-dead. Too much research, not enough sleep. He also missed breakfast and lunch…and dinner the night before. He would deal with food and sleep later. Right now, he was craving the comfort of cigarettes. With the strike of a match, he was soon dragging in the smoke into his millennium old lungs. Leaning back, he exhaled into the air.

While he may not be able to convert darkness into the form of gas yet, Dev imagined it would smell like second-hand smoke. That made him think; what if he couldn’t make dark gas? He would have to do more research into that in the library…
Devin almost got up, but his headache was threatening to scream “SIT THE FUCK BACK DOWN” at him. He shoved the Marlboro back into his mouth and inhaled deeply.

It had been a week from the time when Dev arrived at Foresta. Since then, he had been doing nothing but researching his traits obsessively in the library. After all, it was the only reason he was here. With luck, he might be out of Foresta Academy in maybe a month or so.

He breathed out, attempting to make smoke rings, but it came out as a smoky mess as usual. So far, his efforts were fruitless; you’d think such a large library in such a location would provide Devin with the information he wanted. He tapped the ash off the end of the cigarette, and took in another deep breath.

A quiet place at last! The glorious sun shining down upon the rose garden as if it were a king fit for a god. A sparkle gleaming from the beautiful flowers shone in his face as he looked around. What more could any mortal human need more than the radiant enclosure he had found himself in?

Zeke stumbled into the rose garden, unaware of where he was or even who he was in his exaustion. Traveling for days on end did not agree with his body. He had barely eaten any food since his last stay in... Bah! Not even he knew what the last town was called nor did he care in the slightest. He cared very little for humans at this point to the extent that he didn't consider himself one anymore. Although the ones from his past held a special place inside of his heart; something he had never told anyone before.

He lurched further into open, his hands questing for another student. As addled as he was, Zeke was able to verify that it was indeed smoke floating through the air. Cigarette smoke, no less! As he continued into the smoke, a sharp pain struck him in the temple.

The overuse of his ability had caught up to him at last. If only he had had a choice when he made the decision; sustaining himself by tricking his mind with illusions. The acute agony receded to little more than a twinge in the side of his head. Looking up he noticed the souce of the smoke; a strange man sitting on the benches attemping to make smoke.

Zeke noticed the curious aura surrounding his person; one he had rarely seen before. Could he be one of the immortals? Lies! That was impossible, he would not be here if he were. He concluded that the man must have an abnormal aging process. Still, he was interested in this man and decided to greet him.

"Hey! Mind toning that down a little?" He called out as loud as his body would let him.

Surprised that someone was around, Dev’s eyes jerked open. He stopped in mid-breath, and begun to cough out the smoke in alarm.

“My apologies. Didn’t see you there.”

He sat up, straightening up his posture, but he didn’t put out the Marlboro. The other student would just have to put up with his desire for tobacco.

With his free hand, he wiped the dust of his sleeves and adjusted his collar. The way Dev presented himself was always important, in his opinion. He looked up at the guy who was speaking to him. It obviously was a guy- the tone of voice indicated it. Dev found himself looking up at a red-head, with matching eyes.

His mind came to sudden stop. This guy had red eyes, and his eyes where a shade of maroon. Maybe there was a connection? Perhaps not, but it gave him a better idea he hadn’t thought of; asking. He almost got up, but his head throbbed harder, reminding him that he wasn’t ready for facing the musty smell of books. Besides, he had to deal with the man in front of him. To leave now would be rude.

“Can I help you with anything?” Devin said, with a more conversational tone.

While he was waiting a reply, he took in another drag, this time more shallow.

Clearing his way through the smoke, he finds himself a seat next to the other student. Zeke eyes him as he starts to cough from the cigarette.

"I'm not surprised considering all that smoke you're blowing out."

Turning his head, he noticed that the guy next to him began to adjust his collar and wipe the dust. His respect rose as they turned to face one another, observing each other for the usual things they could find. The other boys appearance first appealed to Zeke's eyes noticing that he too was formal.

Staring into his eyes, he noticed that they were maroon while his own were red. Maybe there were other things in common, maybe not. Zeke waved away the smoke once more as the other boy attempted to stand up. Was it really okay for him to be smoking?

"Not really. Just taking a little walk. My names Zeke, by the way. Nice to meet you." Extending his hand to be courteous. "If you dont mind me asking; Are you Immortal?"

He exhaled, tilting his head away from the boy to make sure he wouldn’t cop a face full of smoke. He could tell that the guy didn’t like the fact that he was smoking, but Devin pretended not to notice.

“Not really. Just taking a little walk. My name’s Zeke, by the way. Nice to meet you.”

Dev shook the boy’s hand. Zeke – The name was definitely of English origin, as it sounded familiar, though it wasn’t from his time period. Let’s see… came around the 90’s…short for Ezekiel…which came from the bible…

“If you don’t mind me asking; Are you immortal?”

He looked at Zeke. They had known each other for less than five minutes – and Zeke didn’t even know his name. Yet, within the brief moment they had interacted in, he had already come to the conclusion that Devin was immortal – which was very close to the truth – without any clues.

Dev put the cigarette back into his mouth. He quickly inhaled, then exhaled, again turning his head away. Who was this boy? A mind reader? A memory reader? A psychic? Perhaps Zeke knew something he didn’t. If that was the case, he ought to ask.

“You’re getting warm,” he said simply. “What gave you that impression?”

Zeke chuckled at his nonchalant behavior at his guess, neither surprised nor irritated, simply not caring at all. "To answer your question, whether it's a side effect of my ability or not, I am able to sense people's auras and it helps that I have met one of your kind some time ago. He was an irritable man, having lived many lifetimes but that is another story."

He shrugged, deep in thought of the fond memories they shared together. Traveling as wanderers and mercenaries, punishing the local towns before he disappeared altogether with absolutely no trace. Shaking off the past, Zeke turns to his senior in respect, regardless of his smoking habits.

"So what brings you to this school?" He questioned, curious as to why an immortal such as he, would be at this school. A slight breeze filled the air, driving the cloud of smoke towards the school. Who was this man? And how old was he really? A multitude of questions sprang to his mind as he recalled the exact same situation with Melchizedeck.

The rest of what the boy had to say seemed unimportant, so Devin tuned out. He watched as the boy seemed to reminisce over something. Then he focused on what Zeke had told him. His kind? HIS KIND? Did he really know anything? Dev felt slightly excited, but his inner pessimist told himself not to hope for too much.

Dev brought the cigarette to his mouth, tapping off the ash before doing so. Inhaling the smoke with a shallow breath, then exhaling, turning his head away again. There we go, all calm again.

"So what brings you to this school?”

He chortled, amused with the question. Why was he here? Isn’t that what he was thinking about ever since he came here? To answer his one question, the question he had been asking for centuries.
Who am I?
But Dev thought about Zeke. Could he really answer truthfully? He was already being friendly, too friendly to the young’un sitting next to him. And out of all things Devin had learned in his life the two most important things he knew were "Don’t trust Christians" and "Don’t make friends". He took another drag while he thought, about this, then exhaled.

“I still haven’t mastered my powers,” he half-lied.

It was one of the smaller reasons on why he was here.

The man's unsocial behavior irritated Zeke, even to a child such as him. Remembering that the stranger sitting next to him was an immortal he decided to merely let it wash away. After all, being immortal also had its cons as well as its pros; One could not become too attached to any mortal for fear of wandering the earth, unable to die and escape from the pain.

"I still haven't mastered my powers."

Hah! Was that really the truth? Zeke had a hard time believing one as old as he wouldn't have mastered his powers long ago. Was this man merely a smoking fool?

"That may be but that's not why you're really here, are you?" He questioned, glancing at him out of the corner of his eye as he wiped the floating ash from his shirt. Now just what this man searching for? Melchizedeck was an irritable immortal, and may have seemed crazed from the many centuries that he had lived but the one thing he was looking for kept him sane.

"I wonder if he ever found what he was looking for..." Zeke mutters to himself, now in a bad mood from the man next to him and his memories of Mechizedeck.

Dev grinned, seeing Zeke was irritated. Ah! So he was really just a young’un! He could remember when he was that inexperienced…
Okay, maybe he couldn’t. After all, it was ages ago. And there was only so much Devin could memorize, despite his lifespan. But Zeke reminded Dev of his impatience with an old witch, the one who had saved his life. He didn’t even learn her name.

“That may be but that's not why you're really here, are you?”

“So you are a mind reader,” he thought out loud.

Either that or Dev was a terrible, terrible liar.
Which he doubted. After all, century after century he had to lie about his identity, and where he came from.

“I wonder if he ever found what he was looking for...”

Who what was looking for? Devin was going to ask, but then he felt like Zeke hadn’t wanted him to hear that. He lingered on this thought, debating against himself on whether he should ask what seemed to be a very personal question.

“So you are a mind reader,”

Zeke quietly chuckled at his little comment, many had thought he was a mind reader due to instincts. It wasn't a hard thing to guess as he was an immortal. It is a hard thing to believe that such a person had not mastered his powers in the many centuries that he has already lived.

"Since you're already here, maybe there's something that I could help you with. I'm sure there's a book or two that you haven't found somewhere in that library." Zeke smiled, eager to learn more about the immortals. He had long since researched the longetivity that flowed within their blood but had never found anything.

"Of course, that'd be a good experience for me too." Hiding any intetions that he would not want to be seen under a fake smile.

(Consider it a challenge? Yay for optimism! Nah, I'll put more effort into it. Anyway, is there any specific way you want this thing to go?)

Dev put out his cigarette as he heard Zeke chuckle. Maybe he got it wrong. Maybe he was slow at figuring it out. He didn’t really care. Perhaps telling him about his unmastered powers was stupid. But hey, it was nothing but the truth. Maybe not the real reason why he was here, but the truth.

"Since you're already here, maybe there's something that I could help you with. I'm sure there's a book or two that you haven't found somewhere in that library.”

“Thank you. I’ll think about it,” Devin answered politely.

Dev returned Zeke’s smile. It was clear that Zeke was also interested in “immortal” people, to not notice would make one a fool. Why would he have such an interest though?

“Of course, that’d be a good experience for me too."

What were his true intentions? Maybe he wanted to be immortal himself. That could be dangerous. In that case, he ought to decline the offer. No, he would ask for a reason before jumping to conclusions.

But first; Why the interest in immortals?”

Zeke merely smiled at the man next to him in an effort to figure out the enigma that he is. Would he ever give a straight answer? It was difficult enough conversing with an immortal but a secretive one was no better.

"Well I'm there's lots that you can do here. You might even have some fun during your time here." He voiced, shrugging his shoulders, dusting away the ash once more. Immortal or not, that was really starting to be fairly bothersome.

He had always wondered what it would be like to be immortal. Shaking his head, Zeke decided he would rather live a mortal life then suffer through the cycle of pain and suffering that is life. It was not something just anyone can deal with, many had gone insane from being unable to die, unable to release themselves from the agony. Gah! One was always searching for an answer whether it was known or not. "I'm a fool to think an immortal life would be nice..."

"I don't suppose you're going to be any more social. Is there anything that you need assistance with?" Zeke began to wonder if he would ever open up. It began to bore him; this man was obviously not going to open up anytime soon. Nevertheless, he was both curious and had the time to pry open the shell with which he had encased himself.

"...Yeah..." He said. It was clearly evident that Devin wasn't paying any attention.

“He didn’t answer my question,” reflected Dev to himself. He shrugged again, realizing such things weren’t really his business. Perhaps it was time to come clean; this young’un seemed eager to help, and Devin knew it was what he needed. If Zeke became immortal in the process, then so be it – He would leave Foresta as soon as he found out what he was. He racked his tired brain for a verdict. Take the help…Or leave?

"I don't suppose you're going to be any more social. Is there anything that you need assistance with?"

By now, he had made a decision.

“I’ll take your help,” Devin said confidently, pausing before continuing. “I want to know who I am. Or what I am. So tell me- How much do you know about immortal people?”

"How much do you know about immortal people?”

"How much do I know? Next to nothing to what another immortal can tell you. The one I had contact with was very secretive. What little information he parted with were things that I had already known from my research." Zeke shrugged; to be honest, he had a curiosity about the immortals. At first thought, it seemed to be a great idea until it came crashing down; How would one die as an immortal? Many had been lost as they become insane from being unable to die.

"Is it really something you want to know? No good can come of knowing the truth sometimes." He replied, in a cold manner. "Death is a luxury. As an immortal you do not have the comfort of the eternal slumber. I admit that the idea of immortality was once a goal of mine, but now, that silly idea is nothing more than a long forgotten dream."

Zeke attempted to smile as he shook is head, forcing his thoughts to disappear into the depths of his subconcious. "I'm sorry for that. Would you like to go to the library now or perhaps, roam around the school some more. I'm a recent addition but I hear the teachers are quite nice."

He sat and waited for Zeke to finish, not even stopping him when he got mad.
“I can acknowledge that it may be a big regret. I don’t care. I’ve looked for too long – a great deal too long – and I’ve worked too hard to just give up because I’m scared of the result.”
Dev shook his head as he said this.
“I believe I have the ability to die – most likely not through old age, but of other causes such as disease and murder,” he said in a grave tone. “I certainly can’t test it out.”
He leaned forward, putting his head closer to his knees. He squeezed his eyes shut. Dev knew what was going to happen. He was going to cry.

Stop it! He thought, but his headache drowned out his mental protests. He shouldn’t cry, he was a grown man of one thousand and nine years! For fuck’s sake…
Dev took deep breaths, putting his head between his knees as if he were ill. As soon as the tears were forced back, he leaned back against the bench, awkwardly pokerfaced.
“But you’re right,” he sighed, shaking his head again. “Death’s a luxury. But, on another note, I would still like to know what you know. Maybe you don’t know much, however there still is a small chance you know something I know not.”

“I am very hungry though, so we’ll go into the tavern in the village. I know the dining room’s closer…But I have my reasons. You can tell me what you know while we walk,” a smile curved on his face as he got up, pushing his tired body over to the path leading down to the village.
